BACKGROUND Routine measurement of serum calcitonin to detect medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) continues to be fiercely debated, although less attention has been paid to the positive predictive value (PPV) of this method. METHODS We collected data from 959 patients with nontoxic nodular goiter; thyroidectomy was performed in 307 of these patients. RESULTS Thirty-nine patients had elevated s...

OBJECTIVE This review outlines advances in the diagnosis, genetic testing, and progress in medullary thyroid cancer (MTC) treatment in light of the most recent evidence. METHODS English-language articles pertaining to MTC published up to 2012 were reviewed. The pertinent articles and their references were obtained and those considered relevant were reviewed for inclusion. RESULTS MTC is an ...

Purpose: Calcium/calmodulin-dependent kinase II (CaMKII) is involved in the regulation of cell proliferation. Its endogenous inhibitor (hCaKIINa) is expressed in some cell types. We determined the role of CaMKII in RET-stimulated proliferation and hCaMKIINa in medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC). Experimental Design: We analyzed the role of RET mutants on CaMKII activation in NIH3T3 and in MTC ce...

Wild boar (Sus scrofa) and red deer (Cervus elaphus) are the main maintenance hosts for bovine tuberculosis (bTB) in continental Europe. Understanding Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTC) excretion routes is crucial to define strategies to control bTB in free-ranging populations, nevertheless available information is scarce. Aiming at filling this gap, four different MTC excretion routes (o...

A rapid, cheap and effective method for diagnosing tuberculosis (TB) is essential for TB control. We evaluated the performance of an immunochromatographic assay (ICA) kit (SD Bioline TB Ag MPT64 rapid test) designed for detecting Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTC) in liquid and solid cultures to determine its ability to detect and differentiate MTC directly in sputum samples. We attempted...

Tumor cells of a human medullary thyroid carcinoma were isolated and propagated in tissue culture. Several cell lines with different morphology developed from the primary culture, among others a fibroblast-like growing cell line (MTC-F) and a cell line growing as a suspension of single cells and spherical cell clusters (MTC-SK). The MTC-SK cell line was serially propagated for 90 passages, over...

Previous research has suggested that a habit reversal treatment might be used effectively in a home-based minimal therapist contact (MTC) protocol to facilitate flexibility and increase treatment completion rates. Recent reviews of MTC interventions have found it to be generally efficacious, cost-effective, and generalizable. While MTC has been used for certain health-related disorders (e.g., h...

Machine Type Communication (MTC) is the automatic exchange of information through a network, including devices or machines, without human intervention. MTC applications aim to endow the machine with intelligence, in order to automate everyday life process. Some of the more established application areas are: health care, city automation, smart energy, positioning and tracking, security and surve...

OBJECTIVE This study was designed to evaluate the ultrasonographic (US) findings of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) as compared to findings for papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC). MATERIALS AND METHODS The study included 21 cases of MTC that were surgically diagnosed between 2002 and 2007 and 114 cases of PTC that were diagnosed in 2007. Two radiologists reached a consensus in the evaluation...

Medullary thyroid cancers (MTC) are rare neuroendocrine tumors arising from the parafollicular C-cells of the thyroid. In this review, we provide a general overview of the classification, pathology, and clinical management of MTC. In the latter half, we survey the underlying genetic framework of MTC and its potential implications within a diagnostic and therapeutic context.
