Two rare cases of carpal tunnel syndrome caused by calcification in the carpal tunnel are reported. One case involved a tumorous calcification consisting of basic calcium phosphate, and the other involved a diffuse calcification consisting of a mixture of calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate and basic calcium phosphate. These cases suggest that the shape of carpal tunnel calcifications is influenced...

Sensory conduction velocities of the median nerve were studied from digit to palm and from palm to wrist in normal subjects and in patients with the carpal tunnel syndrome. Definite slowing was noted in the palm to wrist segment, even in the early carpal tunnel syndrome. It was noted that 37% of normal women over 40 years of age had electrophysiological evidence of the carpal tunnel syndrome.

Any space-occupying lesion in the carpal tunnel can present with median nerve compression and the symptomatology of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). Typically, history and physical examination reveal sufficient findings to warrant further investigation with electrophysiologic testing; imaging studies, however, are not routinely considered. Here, we present a case of CTS resulting from carpal tunne...

BACKGROUND A new sophisticated method that uses video analysis techniques together with a Maillon Rapide Delta to determine the tensile properties of the transverse carpal ligament-carpal tunnel complex has been developed. METHODS Six embalmed cadaveric specimens amputated at the mid-forearm and aged (mean (SD)): 82 (6.29) years were tested. The six hands were from three males (four hands) an...

The controversy has been considerable regarding the incidence of familial carpal tunnel syndrome. Of particular interest is the relationship between bilateral disease and familial incidence. In this study, we compare the incidence of familial carpal tunnel syndrome in patients with the syndrome in one, both, or neither hands. We report a significantly greater incidence of familial carpal tunnel...

In general, people who perform repetitive motions are often vulnerable to repetitive strain injuries. Because musicians must execute the same motion over and over again while practicing and performing their music, they are an example of a group that often develops these repetitive strain injuries. More specifically, musicians are known for developing neuropathies in their upper limbs, with carp...
