About the year 1625 the Olive, a ship returning to Britain from Pernambuco and driven by bad weather, arrived at Barbados. The island was found to be uninhabited, although the presence of fruits and hogs suggested earlier visits by other ships. The ground "they found by tryalls in several parts, to be so overgrown with Wood; as there could be found no Champions or Savannahs for men to dwell in"...

Hierarchical Powell-Sabin splines are C-continuous piecewise quadratic polynomials defined on a hierarchical triangulation. The mesh is obtained by partitioning an initial conforming triangulation locally with a triadic split, so that it is no longer conforming. We propose a normalized quasi-hierarchical basis for this spline space. The B-spline basis functions have a local support, they form a...

We present a multigrid algorithm for the solution of the linear systems that arise from a finite element discretization of second order elliptic partial differential equations with Powell-Sabin splines. We show that the method yields a uniform convergence independent of the mesh size.

Recently we developed multiscale spaces of C piecewise quadratic polynomials relative to arbitrary polygonal domains Ω ⊂ R. These multiscale bases are weakly stable with respect to the L2 norm. In this paper we show that these bases form strongly stable Riesz bases for the Sobolev spaces Hs(Ω) with s ∈ (2, 5 2 ).

The advantage of 2D-3D image registration methods versus direct image-to-patient registration, is that these methods generally do not require user interaction (such as manual annotations), additional machinery or additional acquisition of 3D data. A variety of intensity-based similarity measures has been proposed and evaluated for different applications. These studies showed that the registrati...

The origin and radiation of nacellid limpets (genera, Cellana and Nacella) are not well-resolved, but fossil records provide evidence of a historical range spanning throughout the PaciWc, including North America (Lindberg and Hickman, 1986) north and south Australia, New Zealand, Java, Chile, and east and west Antarctica (Powell, 1973). The modern biogeographic range of Cellana is mostly tropic...

The idea that demographic change may spur or slow down technological change has become widely accepted among evolutionary archaeologists and anthropologists. Two models have been particularly influential in promoting this idea: a mathematical model by Joseph Henrich, developed to explain the Tasmanian loss of culture during the Holocene; and an agent-based adaptation thereof, devised by Powell ...

In their cross-sectional study, Powell et al found no evidence that genetic ancestry or self-reported ethnicity effected lung function among US smokers, in particular no evidence of a reduced risk of COPD in Hispanics (Hispanic paradox) previously described in a prospective study by Bruse et al. This observation might be due, in part, to the definition of Hispanic and lighter smoking histories ...
