Four choice experiments were conducted with both sexes of the cichlid Pelvicachromis taeniatus using computer-manipulated stimuli of digital images differing in movement, body shape or colouration. The results show that computer animations can be useful and flexible tools in studying preferences of a cichlid with complex and variable preferences for different visual cues.

The Epstein-Barr virus ZEBRA protein controls the viral lytic cycle. ZEBRA activates the transcription of viral genes required for replication. ZEBRA also binds to oriLyt and interacts with components of the viral replication machinery. The mechanism that differentiates the roles of ZEBRA in regulation of transcription and initiation of lytic replication is unknown. Here we show that S173, a re...

Because zebra mussels spread rapidly throughout the eastern United States in the late 1980s and early 1990s, their spread to the western United States has been expected. Overland dispersal into inland lakes and reservoirs, however, has occurred at a much slower rate than earlier spread via connected, navigable waterways. We forecasted the potential western spread of zebra mussels by predicting ...

23 The African Great Lakes are characterized by an extraordinary diversity of endemic cichlid 24 fish species. The cause of this diversity is still largely unknown. Most studies have tried to 25 solve this question by focusing on macro-evolutionary processes, such as speciation. 26 However, the ecological processes determining local cichlid diversity have so far been 27 understudied, even thoug...

Zebra is publicly available free routing software that is distributed under GNU General Public License. It supports the following IP routing protocols: BGP-4, RIPv1, RIPv2 and OSPFv2. Zebra is unique in its design because it has a process for each protocol that runs on a multithreaded UNIX kernel. Zebra software offers true modularity since each protocol module can be upgraded or configured ind...

The arthropod parasite burdens of 14 Cape mountain zebra (Equus zebra zebra), shot for survey purposes in the Mountain Zebra National Park in the eastern Cape Province, were determined. Three species of Gasterophilus larvae and 9 ixodid tick species were recovered. Larvae of Gasterophilus pecorum were the most numerous of the fly larvae recovered and Margaropus winthemi was the most abundant ti...

Iodine is the main ingredient produced by the thyroid hormone, which playa a central role in the metabolism and the immune system. The present study aims to evaluate the effects of feeding Artemia fransiscana enriched with potassium iodide on antioxidant and immune gene expression in zebra fish (Danio rerio). Zebra larvae with an average weight of 2±0.01 mg were randomly distributed into 4 trea...

ZEBRA is a site-specific DNA binding protein that functions as a transcriptional activator and as an origin binding protein. Both activities require that ZEBRA recognizes DNA motifs that are scattered along the viral genome. The mechanism by which ZEBRA discriminates between the origin of lytic replication and promoters of EBV early genes is not well understood. We explored the hypothesis that ...

This study quantifies the infection prevalence and intensity of the European, commensal, host-specific ciliate Conchophthirus acuminatus (Scuticociliatida: Conchophthiridae) in five zebra mussel populations within the Republic of Belarus. Laboratory and field experiments were also conducted to assess variables affecting infection. C. acuminatus was found in zebra mussels in all five waterbodies...

ZEBRA is an Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) transcriptional activator that mediates a genetic switch between the latent and lytic states of the virus by binding to the promoters of genes involved in lytic DNA replication and activating their transcription. A computer survey revealed that 9 of 23 potential or known ZEBRA-responsive EBV genes contained two or more upstream binding sites; this suggested ...
