The Mongolian gerbil, Meriones unguiculatus, has been widely employed as a model for studies of the inner ear. In spite of its established use for auditory research, no robust protocols to induce ototoxic hair cell damage have been developed for this species. In this paper, we demonstrate the development of an aminoglycoside-induced model of hair cell loss, using kanamycin potentiated by the lo...

In several cooperatively breeding species, reproductively suppressed, nonbreeding females are attracted to infants and routinely provide alloparental care, while breeding females may attack or kill other females' infants. The mechanisms underlying the transition from alloparental to infanticidal behavior are unknown. In this study, we tested the hypothesis that this transition is associated wit...

Optical fluorescence and reflectance measurements have been used to map the distribution of metabolic states in three dimensions in the gerbil brain with a spatial resolution of 200 microns an a time resolution of 4-6 s. In Mongolian gerbils anesthetized with pentobarbital, the redox states of the nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) and flavoprotein components of the electron transport cha...

In our previous work, the basilar membrane velocity V(BM) for a gerbil cochlea was calculated and compared with physiological measurements. The calculated V(BM) showed excessive phase excursion and, in the active case, a best-frequency place shift of approximately two fifths of an octave higher. Here we introduce a refined model that uses the time-averaged Lagrangian for the conservative system...

Linopirdine and XE991, selective blockers of K(+) channels belonging to the KCNQ family, were applied to hair cells isolated from gerbil vestibular system and to hair cells in slices of pigeon crista. In type II hair cells, both compounds inhibited a slowly activating, slowly inactivating component of the macroscopic current recruited at potentials above -60 mV. The dissociation constants for l...

2SNP software package implements a new very fast scalable algorithm for haplotype inference based on genotype statistics collected only for pairs of SNPs. This software can be used for comparatively accurate phasing of large number of long genome sequences, e.g. obtained from DNA arrays. As an input 2SNP takes genotype matrix and outputs the corresponding haplotype matrix. On datasets across 79...

Intracochlear pressure was measured close to the basal basilar membrane in gerbil with pure-tone stimulation. This report describes harmonic distortion in the pressure. The harmonic components were tuned in frequency and physiologically vulnerable, implying that they were related to the cell-derived force that sharpens tuning at low levels in healthy cochleae. For stimulus frequencies in the vi...

We deciphered the genome of Yersinia pestis strain 2501, isolated from the Junggar Basin, a newly discovered great gerbil plague focus in Xinjiang, China. The total length of assembly was 4,597,322 bp, and 4,265 coding sequences were predicted within the genome. It is the first Y. pestis genome from this plague focus.

RÉSUMÉ ABSTRACT The Mongolian gerbil has become increasingly popular in middle-ear research, as it is low in cost and has easily approachable middle-ear structures. The goal of this thesis is to present vibration measurements on the gerbil eardrum. Displacement frequency responses are acquired in five gerbils at three or four points along the manubrium and at up to 8 points on the eardrum. We u...
