G9P[6] and G9P[8] rotavirus strains were identified during 1995/96 through the molecular epidemiological surveillance of rotavirus strains circulating in the UK between 1995 and 1998. An increase in the incidence and spread of sporadic infections with rotavirus genotype G9P[8] across the UK was detected in the two following seasons. Partial sequencing of the VP7 gene showed that all the UK stra...

Equine rotavirus FI23 was shown to be prototypic of a novel G serotype, provisionally G14, by cross-neutralization and VP7 sequence determination. Although distinct, there are as few as six differing amino acid residues (92, 94, 96, 146, 147, and 221) in the VP7 antigenic regions of FI23 and G3 rotaviruses.

Rotavirus infection of cells in culture induces major changes in Ca(2+) homeostasis. These changes include increases in plasma membrane Ca(2+) permeability, cytosolic Ca(2+) concentration, and total cell Ca(2+) content and a reduction in the amount of Ca(2+) released from intracellular pools sensitive to agonists. Various lines of evidence suggest that the nonstructural glycoprotein NSP4 and po...

Rotavirus, a non-enveloped reovirus, buds into the rough endoplasmic reticulum and transiently acquires a membrane. The structural glycoprotein, VP7, a 38-kD integral membrane protein of the endoplasmic reticulum (ER), presumably transfers to vi.rus in this process. The gene for VP7 potentially encodes a protein of 326 amino acids which has two tandem hydrophobic domains at the NH2-terminal, ea...

The three-dimensional structure of Broadhaven virus (BRDV) has been determined to 23 A resolution by cryoelectron microscopy and image processing. As predicted from sequence homology, the BRDV structure resembles that of bluetongue virus (BTV) with the notable exception of one of the outer shell proteins. The cores of BRDV and BTV are identical at medium resolution; they have a diameter of 710 ...

Abstract Bluetongue (BT) is an economically important arboviral disease of sheep, cattle, goats, and wild ruminants, particularly in America Europe. However, it has remained uncontrolled due to the evolution >32 serologically distinct BT virus (BTV) serotypes lack broad-spectrum vaccines. While outer VP2 VP5 proteins, involved cell penetration, are less conserved, certain core BTV protei...

The functions of the two rotavirus glycoproteins were investigated by using tunicamycin and a variant of SA11 rotavirus having nonglycosylated VP7. Results showed that glycosylation of VP7 is not required for normal viral morphogenesis and infectivity and suggested that the nonstructural glycoprotein is involved in assembly of the outer capsid.

During an epidemiological study on rotaviruses among diarrheic children in the northeastern and middle belt regions of Nigeria, the distribution of G and P types was investigated in 127 stool specimens. By PCR G typing, the G type of rotaviruses in 97 samples was identified. Interestingly, an unusual G8 type, as well as common G1, G2, and G3 types, was detected more frequently (31 of 112; 27.7%...

Orbiviruses are double-stranded RNA viruses that have profound economic and veterinary significance, 3 of the most important being African horse sickness virus (AHSV), bluetongue virus (BTV), and epizootic hemorrhagic disease virus (EHDV). Currently, vaccination and vector control are used as preventative measures; however, there are several problems with the current vaccines. Comparing viral a...
