Electronic structure calculations on million-atom samples are employed to investigate the effect of macroscopic deformations on energetics of vacancies in aluminum. We find that volumetric strain associated with a deformation largely governs the formation energies of monovacancies and divacancies. The calculations suggest that nucleation of these defects is increasingly favorable under volumetr...

In “hybrid” search, observers search a visual display for any of several targets held in memory. It is known that the contents of the memory set can guide visual search (e.g., if the memorized targets are all animals, visual attention can be guided away from signs). It is not known if the visual display can guide memory search (e.g., if the memory set is composed of signs and animals, can a vis...

In this paper we describe a medical application where we exploit surface properties (measured in form of 3D-Range scans of the human back) to derive a-priori unknown additional properties of the proband, that otherwise can only be acquired using multiple x-ray recordings or volumetric scans as CT or MRI. On the basis of 274 data sets, we perform classification using statistical shape analysis m...

In this paper, we investigate a new approach to the cooccurrence matrix currently used to extract textural features: co-occurrence matrices for volumetric data. While traditional texture metrics have concentrated on 2D texture, 3D imaging modalities are becoming more and more prevalent, providing the possibility of examining texture as a volumetric phenomenon. Just as computer graphics have use...

The measurement and compensation of volumetric positioning errors can greatly improve the accuracy of the machine tools. In this paper, a sequential step diagonal measurement is introduced to calibrate 9 volumetric positioning errors in a quick way. Measurements under various thermal conditions are preformed to understand the relationship between the volumetric positioning errors and the temper...

Volumetric registration of brains is required for inter-subject studies of functional and anatomical data. Intensity-driven registration typically results in some degree of misalignment of cortical and gyral folds. Increased statistical power in group studies may be achieved through improved alignment of cortical areas by using sulcal landmarks. In this paper we describe a new volumetric regist...

Subsurface scattering and light transport in volumetric media are critical to achieve a realistic depiction of a material. We describe several analytical approximations and methods for volumetric light transport in media of various optical properties that are efficient and easy to compute. Most natural materials exhibit a sudden surge in brightness called the opposition effect around the zero p...

Large interactive display systems are becoming increasingly pervasive, but most have been studied in isolation, rather than in the context of other technologies in the environment. We present an in-depth field evaluation of large interactive displays within a multi-display work environment used in the NASA Mars Exploration Rover (MER) missions, a complex and authentic use setting. We uncover ho...

Two experiments examined whether different levels of motor and visual experience influence action perception and whether this effect depends on the type of perceptual task. Within an action recognition task (Experiment 1), professional basketball players and novice college students were asked to identify basketball dribbles from point-light displays. Results showed faster reaction times and gre...

Similarly a simplistic reconstruction procedure can lead to inaccuracies in the relative alignment of the data from each DICOM image in the reconstructed volume, resulting in the dislocation of small structures. Conclusion: The reconstruction method described here generates matched and merged volumetric datasets well suited to the application of automatic image processing and analysis techniques.
