This work, a collaboration between Alstom Transport and the MIT Humans and Automation Laboratory (HAL), is focused on the development of an interactive in-cab scheduling interface for train operators. Currently, operators rely on a combination of paper schedules, paper speed charts, and rote memorization to meet the many demands of train operation. The separation of this information over multip...
The paper studies a train scheduling problem faced by railway infrastructure managers during real-time traffic control. When train operations are perturbed, a new conflict-free timetable of feasible arrival and departure times needs to be recomputed, such that the deviation from the original one is minimized. The problem can be viewed as a huge job shop scheduling problem with no-store constrai...
UK has a large and complex passenger rail network divided into a number of franchises. Crew scheduling, one of the last stages of operations planning before services go live, is mission critical to the train operating companies, which would feel the pain of manual scheduling. As far as the author is aware, attempts by these companies to adopt an automatic optimizing train crew scheduling system...
A novel constraint model for scheduling train trips on a network of tracks used in both directions is described. We argue that a generalization of a job-shop scheduling formulation can drastically decrease the problem size. Preliminary complexity and performance results and a set of examples of schedules generated by our implementation are presented.
Title of Document: MULTI-CARRIER TRACK CAPACITY ALLOCATION IN FORWARD AND SPOT MARKETS OF FREIGHT TRANSPORT April Yi-Wen Kuo, Doctor of Philosophy, 2008 Directed By: Associate Professor, Elise Miller-Hooks, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering This dissertation addresses multi-carrier, multi-line train scheduling problems for forward and spot markets. Schedules resulting from solut...
In this paper we consider the train unit shunting problem extended with service task scheduling. This originates from Dutch Railways, which is main railway operator in Netherlands. Its urgency stems upcoming expansion of rolling stock fleet needed to handle ever-increasing number passengers. The consists matching units arriving on a yard departing trains, scheduling tasks such as cleaning and m...
