BACKGROUND Adverse events (AEs), such as intracranial hemorrhage, thromboembolic event, and progressive aortic insufficiency, create substantial morbidity and mortality during continuous flow left ventricular assist device support yet their relation to blood pressure control is underexplored. METHODS AND RESULTS A multicenter retrospective review of patients supported for at least 30 days and...
Background and study aims Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) with endoscopic biliary sphincterotomy (EBS) or endoscopic papillary balloon dilation (EPBD) are common techniques of biliary decompression. Potential risks include gastrointestinal hemorrhage, which can be increased by antiplatelet agents, anticoagulants (AC) and/or novel oral anticoagulants (NOACs) (ie. apixaban, ...
BACKGROUND To date, there has been no systematic examination of the relationship between international normalized ratio (INR) control measurements and the prediction of adverse events in patients with atrial fibrillation on oral anticoagulation. METHODS AND RESULTS We searched MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Cochrane through January 2008 for studies of atrial fibrillation patients receiving vitamin-K an...
Congenital factor X deficiency is a rare autosomal recessive bleeding disorder that presents with variable bleeding tendency and prolonged coagulation tests, prothrombin time, and partial thromboplastin time. Thromboembolic events have not been reported in patients with factor X deficiency yet. Herein, we report a patient with factor X deficiency who had recurrent venous thromboembolic events.
BACKGROUND Pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) for atrial fibrillation is associated with a transient increased risk of thromboembolic and hemorrhagic events. We hypothesized that dabigatran can be safely used as an alternative to continuous warfarin for the periprocedural anticoagulation in PVI. METHODS AND RESULTS A total of 999 consecutive patients undergoing PVI were included; 376 patients wer...
OBJECTIVE To determine the incidence of venous thromboembolic disease in children of Chinese origin, and associated predisposing factors. DESIGN. Retrospective case series. SETTING A general, public hospital serving a population of approximately 181,000 children in Hong Kong. PATIENTS AND METHODS Hong Kong Chinese children under the age of 15 years who were diagnosed with a symptomatic veno...
Aspirin is often perceived either as a harmless panacea or as a useless poison which causes endless, needless trouble. We have carefully reviewed the literature on all aspects of aspirin and find that neither view is justified. Regular use of even low-dose aspirin (150 mg/day or less) may lead to clinically-important adverse events, particularly haemorrhage. The risk of such an event is conside...
