Gold salts have been used for many years in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. The common side effects are mucocutaneous reactions, but hepatotoxic reaction and isolated neutropenia are rare complications. We report a 62-year-old woman with rheumatoid arthritis who had developed hepatitis and neutropenia simultaneously after receiving 137.5 mg of sodium aurothiomalate.

INTRODUCTION Pathology service in Ghana is still in its infancy due to inadequate personnel (Pathologists) and a poor perception of the role of the pathologist in health care delivery. The state of affairs in Ghana may be partly blamed on an accident of history, the anomaly resulting from which has been allowed to become the norm. In the days of the colonial administration of the Gold Coast, as...

The temperature induced melting transition of a self-complementary DNA strand covalently attached at the 5' end to the surface of a gold interdigitated microelectrode (GIME) was monitored in a novel, label-free, manner. The structural state of the hairpin was assessed by measuring four different electronic properties of the GIME (capacitance, impedance, dissipation factor and phase angle) as a ...

Melanomas are fast growing high-mortality tumors, and specific treatments for melanomas are needed. Melanoma cells overexpress focal adhesion kinase (FAK) compared to normal keratinocytes, and we sought to exploit this difference to create a selectively lethal therapy. We combined gold nanoparticles (GNP) with antibodies targeting phosphorylated FAK (p-FAK). These conjugates (p-FAK-GNP) entered...

Parenteral therapy with sodium bismuth tartrate has now been undertaken in rheumatoid arthritis for some time. This salt, according to Martindale (Vol. 2, 1943), is a white powder or yellowish scale preparation containing 35-42 per cent. bismuth. Its general safety can be deduced from the report of Goodman (1948) that almost X ton, representing more than lI million adult doses, had been adminis...

We present a nanoplasmonic aptasensor for adenosine triphosphate (ATP) by using single gold nanoparticles (GNPs) as probes. The specific aptamer-ATP binding induced conformational change could modulate the surface-dependent self-catalytic growth of GNPs, which enabled the detection of ATP with ultra-sensitivity and selectivity.

1. The effect of drugs that cause neutropenia has been tested upon normal bone marrow colony formation in semi-solid agar. 2. Thiouracil, methimazole and phenylbutazone do not cause inhibition whereas sodium aurothiomalate, 6-mercaptopurine and chloramphenicol cause doserelated inhibition of colony formation at or below drug concentrations found in serum during therapy. Chloramphenicol also inh...
