We extend the centering model for the resolution of intia-sentential anaphora and specify how to handle complex sentences. An empirical evaluation indicates that the functional information structure guides the search for an antecedent within the sentence.

These chunks correspond in some way to prosodic patterns. It appears, for instance, that the strongest stresses in the sentence fall one to a chunk, and pauses are most likely to fall between chunks. Chunks also represent a grammatical watershed of sorts. The typical chunk consists of a single content word surrounded by a constellation of function words, matching a fixed template. A simple cont...

This paper presents a novel system, which uses a set of video cameras to support the manual annotation of object interaction and person to object interaction within smart environments. The DANTE (Dynamic ANnotation system for smart Environments) system uses two stereo-based cameras to monitor and track objects, which are tagged with inexpensive paper based fiducial markers. Offline, the DANTE a...

In this paper we first propose a new statistical parsing model, which is a generative model of lexicalised context-free grammar. We then extend the model to include a probabilistic treatment of both subcategorisation and wh-movement. Results on Wall Street Journal text show that the parser performs at 88.1/87.5% constituent precision/recall, an average improvement of 2.3% over (Collins 96).

A. Clark[2] has shown that the class of languages which have a context-free grammar whose nonterminals can be defined by a finite set of contexts can be identified in the limit, given an enumeration of the language and a test for membership. We show by example that Clark’s algorithm may converge to a grammar that does not define the input language. We review the theoretical background, provide ...

In this paper, we introduce a new normal form for context-free grammars, called reversible context-free grammars, for the problem of learning context-free grammars from positive-only examples. A context-free grammar G = (N, Z, P, S) is said to be reversible if (1) A + G( and B -+ a in P implies A = B and (2) A -+ a@ and A --f aCfl in P implies B = C. We show that the class of reversible context...

This paper presents a reranking approach to combining constituent and dependency parsing, aimed at improving parsing performance on both sides. Most previous combination methods rely on complicated joint decoding to integrate graphand transition-based dependency models. Instead, our approach makes use of a high-performance probabilistic context free grammar (PCFG) model to output k-best candida...

Combining the 1-best output of multiple parsers via parse selection or parse hybridization improves f-score over the best individual parser (Henderson and Brill, 1999; Sagae and Lavie, 2006). We propose three ways to improve upon existing methods for parser combination. First, we propose a method of parse hybridization that recombines context-free productions instead of constituents, thereby pr...

testing plays a vital role in any language teaching program. it allows teachers and stakeholders, including program administrators, parents, admissions officers and prospective employers to be assured that the learners are progressing according to an accepted standard (douglas, 2010). the problems currently facing language testers have both practical and theoretical implications but the first i...
