Different cyanogenic bacterial strains (Chromobacterium violaceum, Pseudomonas fluorescens, Bacillus megaterium) were cultivated under cyanide-forming conditions in the presence of metal-containing solids such as nickel powder or electronic scrap. All microorganisms were able to form water-soluble metal cyanides, however, with different efficiencies. C. violaceum was able to mobilize nickel as ...
Environmental bacteria are endowed with several regulatory systems that have potential applications in biotechnology. In this report, we characterize the arsenic biosensing features of the ars response system from Chromobacterium violaceum in the heterologous host Escherichia coli. We show that the native Pars/arsR system of C. violaceum outperforms the chromosomal ars copy of E. coli when expo...
Chromobacterium violaceum is a facultative anaerobic, Gram-negative rod, prevalent in tropical and subtropical regions. It enters through the skin injury and is capable of causing severe systemic infections leading to septic shock and multiorgan failure. It has been reported by few authors across the world but this is probably the first case of Chromobacterium violaceum isolated from wound seps...
Chromobacterium violaceum is a facultative anaerobic, Gram-negative bacillus which inhabits stagnant water in tropical and subtropical regions. We describe the case of an 80-year-old female patient with C. violaceum bacteremia due to traumatic wound infected by contaminated water and soil. She had persistent fever, hypotension and neutrophilic leukocytosis on admission. Two sets of blood cultur...
Chromobacterium violaceum is a Gram-negative bacterium, abundant in a variety of ecosystems in tropical and subtropical regions, including the water and borders of the Negro River, a major component of the Amazon Basin. As a free-living microorganism, C. violaceum is exposed to a series of variable conditions, such as different sources and abundance of nutrients, changes in temperature and pH, ...
A strain of Chromobacterium violaceum has been isolated which produces bacteriophage tail-like particles in high numbers. The extracellular morphology and the intracellular arrangement of these particles are described.
A case of Chromobacterium violaceum fatal septicemia is reported. The microorganism was isolated from six blood cultures and two suppurated skin lesions. It is the first such case described in Argentina, and it reinforces the need for prolonged treatment and careful clinical evaluation to ensure complete remission of human infections caused by this bacterium.
l-Tryptophan is converted to indole-3-carboxylic acid by growing cultures and resting cell suspensions of Chromobacterium violaceum
The genome of Chromobacterium subtsugae strain PRAA4-1, a betaproteobacterium producing insecticidal compounds, was sequenced and compared with the genome of C. violaceum ATCC 12472. The genome of C. subtsugae displayed a reduction in genes devoted to capsular and extracellular polysaccharide, possessed no genes encoding nitrate reductases, and exhibited many more phage-related sequences than w...
Chromobacterium violaceum causes a rare infection in human, usually in tropical or subtropical areas. We report a fatal case of C. violaceum infection affecting a 40-year-old previously healthy man in Hong Kong. He presented with a wound infection and lymphadenitis. Despite multiple antibiotic treatment, including ciprofloxacin, he succumbed shortly after admission to the hospital. We report th...
