Fixed-point iterative procedures for solving nonlinear parameter dependent problems can converge for some interval of parameter values and diverge as the parameter changes. The Recursive Projection Method (RPM), which stabilizes such procedures by computing a projection onto the unstable subspace is presented. On this subspace a Newton or special Newton iteration is performed, and the fixed-poi...

Contour integration schemes are a valuable tool for the solution of difficult interior eigenvalue problems. However, many large linear systems with multiple right hand sides may prove prohibitive computational expense. The number sides, and thus, cost be reduced if projected subspace is created using moments. In this work, we explore heuristics choice application moments respect to various othe...

We present a general framework for a number of techniques based on projection methods onàugmented Krylov subspaces'. These methods include the deeated GM-RES algorithm, an inner-outer FGMRES iteration algorithm, and the class of block Krylov methods. Augmented Krylov subspace methods often show a signiicant improvement in convergence rate when compared with their standard counterparts using the...

Motivated by a connection with block iterative methods for solving linear systems over finite fields, we consider the probability that the Krylov space generated by a fixed linear mapping and a random set of elements in a vector space over a finite field equals the space itself. We obtain an exact formula for this probability, and from it we derive good lower bounds that approach 1 exponentiall...

The purpose of this paper is to provide a general technique for defining and analyzing smoothing operators for use in multigrid algorithms. The smoothing operators considered are based on subspace decomposition and include point, line, and block versions of Jacobi and Gauss-Seidel iteration as well as generalizations. We shall show that these smoothers will be effective in multigrid algorithms ...

An efficient method for band structure calculations in dielectric photonic crystals is presented. The method uses a finite element discretization coupled with a preconditioned subspace iteration algorithm. Numerical examples are presented which illustrate the behavior of the method.
