BACKGROUND Given its metastatic potential and high incidence, cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck (SCCHN) has significant morbidity and mortality. METHODS We conducted a retrospective review of prospectively collected data for 113 consecutive patients with nodal metastatic cutaneous SCCHN treated surgically with curative intent in a regional center. Survival curves were gen...

Glycolysis is highly upregulated in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). HNSCC glycolysis is an important contributor to disease progression and decreases sensitivity to radiation or chemotherapy. Despite therapeutic advances, the survival rates for HNSCC patients remain low. Understanding glycolysis regulation in HNSCC will facilitate the development of effective therapeutic strategi...

The treatment of patients with locoregionally advanced or unresectable squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck is complex and associated with significant toxicities. During the past 30 years, there has been an ongoing shift in what is perceived as the best treatment approach. Differing radiation techniques have been employed, and chemotherapy has been incorporated in both sequential and co...

An impressive variety of regulatory processes including cell adhesion and migration, proliferation, apoptosis and differentiation folding and routing of glycoproteins have been found to be mediated by specific lectin-carbohydrate interactions. This article summarizes the data on glycobiological aspects of differentiation of squamous epithelia in the head and neck region under physiological cond...

The rise in human papillomavirus (HPV)-associated head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) has elicited significant interest in the role of high-risk HPV in tumorigenesis. Because patients with HPV-positive HNSCC have better prognoses than do their HPV-negative counterparts, current therapeutic strategies for HPV⁺ HNSCC are increasingly considered to be overly aggressive, highlighting a ne...

The immune milieu in malignant tumors can influence the prognosis of patients. However, little is known about the effect the antitumoral therapy has on the inflammatory infiltrate. In head and neck squamous cell carcinoma we found evidence that a neoadjuvant radiochemotherapy could modulate the composition of the intratumoral inflammation into an anti-tumoral pattern.

BACKGROUND This study describes the results of elective irradiation in the N0 neck and tries to identify prognostic factors for regional recurrence. MATERIALS AND METHODS Between 1985 and 2000, 785 cN0 or pN0 necks were treated with elective nodal irradiation in 619 head and neck squamous cell carcinoma patients. RESULTS Regional control at 3 years was 94% in the cN0 (nondissected) neck com...

The immune system plays a key role in the development, establishment, and progression of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). A greater understanding of the dysregulation and evasion of the immune system in the evolution and progression of HNSCC provides the basis for improved therapies and outcomes for patients. HNSCC cells evade the host immune system through manipulation of their o...

Cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck is an invasive skin cancer with significant morbidity and mortality, chiefly among older and immunocompromised patients. We present a case report of a patient without obvious immune suppression developing multiple, eruptive cutaneous squamous cell carcinomas of the scalp. Despite multiple excisions, radiotherapy and adjuvant oral retinoids,...
