formed during the contact of sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) with bovine pulp and dentin. For analysis of the products formed in the volatile phase, 11 mg of bovine pulp tissue were placed in contact with 0.5%, 2.5% and 5.25% NaOCl until complete tissue dissolution occurred. The solid phase microextraction (SPME) fiber was exposed inside the container through the cover membrane and immediately inje...
In the course of our continuing work on transformation of monoterpenes by microorganisms, the biotransformation of (+)- and (-)-carvone was carried out. The metabolites formed during microbial transformations were screened using a simple, rapid and efficient technique: Headspace-solid phase microextraction (SPME)/GC-MS. The results as well as the application of this technique are described.
The complex aroma of wine is derived from many sources, with grape-derived components being responsible for the varietal character. The ability to monitor grape aroma compounds would allow for better understanding of how vineyard practices and winemaking processes influence the final volatile composition of the wine. Here, we describe a procedure using GC-MS combined with headspace solid-phase ...
Headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) coupled with gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) method was developed to determine 3-chloropropane-1,2-diol (3-MCPD) in hydrolyzed vegetable protein and Chinese soy sauce. The 3-MCPD was firstly derivativized with phenylboronic acid in aqueous solution at 90 degrees C for 10 min, then extracted by HS-SPME and finally detected with GC/MS, ...
Characterizing trace compounds in gaseous matrices such as natural gas is challenging owing to the low concentrations and intricate interactions between present. In contrast whole sampling methods, direct situ with preconcentration of on adsorbent tubes followed by thermal desorption chromatography coupled mass spectrometry (TD-GC–MS) a powerful method enabling screen unknown targeted detection...
Dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP) and dimethyl sulphide (DMS) are compounds found mainly in marine phytoplankton and in some halophytic plants. DMS is a globally important biogenic volatile in regulating of global sulfur cycle and planetary albedo, whereas DMSP is involved in the maintenance of plant-environment homeostasis. Plants emit minute amounts of DMS compared to marine phytoplankton and...
HS-SPME was optimised using blank plant sample for analysis of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) of varying polarities in selected medicinal plants obtained from northern part of Botswana, where OCPs such as DDT and endosulfan have been historically applied to control disease carrying vectors (mosquitos and tsetse fly). The optimised SPME parameters were used to isolate analytes from root sample...
A highly sensitive and selective method has been developed for the determination of methylmercury in biological specimens and NIST Standard Reference Materials (SRMs). The procedure involves microwave extraction with acetic acid, followed by derivatization and headspace solid-phase microextraction (SPME) with a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-coated silica fiber. Optimization of conditions includin...
Headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) have traditionally been used, in combination with other analyses, for the chemical characterization of organic residues recovered from archaeological specimens. Recently in many life science fields, comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography-time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GCˆGC-TOFMS) has p...
Seedless triploid watermelons have increased in popularity since the early 1990s, and the demand for seedless fruit is on the rise. Sweetness and sugars are crucial breeding focuses for fruit quality. Volatiles also play an important role; yet, we found no literature for seedless varieties and no reports using solid-phase microextraction (SPME) in watermelon. The objective of this experiment wa...
