Coordination bonds are effective for constructing functional self-healing materials due to their tunable bond strength and metal-ion-induced functionalities. In this work, we incorporate a cobalt(II) triazole complex into a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) matrix. The resulting polymers show solvatochromic behaviour as well as self-healing properties.

For metal-based compounds, the ground- and excited-state dipole moments and the difference thereof are, for the first time, obtained both experimentally and theoretically using solvatochromic equations and DFT/B3LYP/QZVP calculations. The approach is suggested to be promising and easily accessible, and can be universal to elucidate the electronic properties of metal-based compounds.

A cross-reactive colorimetric sensor array composed of solvatochromic dyes in semi-liquid matrices was used to successfully discriminate among eleven common solvents. The multidimensional array response is attributed to both chemical (i.e., analyte-dye interactions) and physical (i.e., spot blooming and refractive index alteration) changes in the sensor spot.

We report the first synthesis and use of a well defined fluorescent organic nanoparticle (FON), tetraethyl anthracene-9,10-diyl-9,10-bis(phosphonate) [TEABP], as a selective anticancer candidate by apoptosis mediated cancer therapy towards U937 cells together with its unique solvatochromic properties.

Initiation rates for Grubbs and Grubbs-Hoveyda second generation pre-catalysts have been measured accurately in a range of solvents. Solvatochromic fitting reveals different dependencies on key solvent parameters for the two pre-catalysts, consistent with different mechanisms by which the Grubbs and Grubbs-Hoveyda pre-catalysts initiate.

The solvatochromic fluorescence properties of 8-(phenylamino)-l-naphthalene-ammoniumsulfonate (1) were investigated in 22 pure solvents of rising polarity. The measurements of both Stokes’ shifts and intensities discriminated between protic and aprotic solvents. Fairly good linear correla­ tion plots of the dependence could be obtained on neglection of the values of tert.-butanol, D M F and DM SO.
