The skin and mucous membranes of healthy subjects are colonized by strains of Staphylococcus epidermidis showing a high diversity of genomic DNA polymorphisms. Prolonged hospitalization and the use of invasive procedures promote changes in the microbiota with subsequent colonization by hospital strains. We report here a patient with prolonged hospitalization due to chronic pancreatitis who was ...

Introduction and Objective Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus agalactiae are traditionally considered contagious mastitis pathogens mainly causing subclinical infections in dairy cattle. The consequences of subclinical mastitis are economic losses to the farmer and impaired milk quality. To improve the control of contagious mastitis pathogens, knowledge of reservoirs and transmission is cr...

Biogeography and individuality shape the structural and functional composition of the human skin microbiome. To explore these factors' contribution to skin microbial community stability, we generated metagenomic sequence data from longitudinal samples collected over months and years. Analyzing these samples using a multi-kingdom, reference-based approach, we found that despite the skin's exposu...

conclusions a higher number of bacterial flora was found in the bodybuilders particularly those using aas in comparison to the controls, which might be due to the influence of these aas on the skin microflora and transmission of the bacteria through the direct contact of the naked skin with the exercise instruments. background anabolic-androgenic steroids (aas) abuse by the athletes has dramati...

Coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) isolated in neonatal late-onset sepsis are often antibiotic resistant. We analyzed CoNS from skin and feces of neonates during hospitalization. Antibiotic resistance of skin isolates increased during hospitalization, especially in Staphylococcus haemolyticus. Staphylococcus warneri showed low antibiotic resistance. Our data suggest that different CoNS spe...

Skin-colonizing gram-positive bacteria produce wall teichoic acids (WTAs) or related glycopolymers for unclear reasons. Using a WTA-deficient Staphylococcus aureus mutant, we demonstrated that WTA confers resistance to antimicrobial fatty acids from human sebaceous glands by preventing fatty acid binding. Thus, WTA is probably important for bacterial skin colonization.

Catheters are most often colonized and become infected via the skin and their external surfaces in the ICU. Therefore, topical antimicrobials, including medical honey, placed at the insertion site should decrease skin colonization and catheter infections. This commentary reviews the main studies on, and the possible reasons of, topical antimicrobial failure in ICUs compared to the reported effi...

Fluconazole-FK506 or fluconazole-cyclosporine drug combinations were tested in an ex vivo Trichophyton mentagrophytes human skin infection model. Conidia colonization was monitored by scanning electron microscopy over a 7-day treatment period. The fluconazole-FK506 combination demonstrated the most obvious advantage over single-drug therapy by clearing conidia and protecting skin from damage at...

In this study we investigated the kinetics of colonization, the host susceptibility and transmissibility of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) after nasal treatment of pigs with three different MRSA strains of distinctive clonal lineages (sequence type 398 [ST398], ST8, and ST9), and origin in weaning piglets. The colonization dose of 5.0 × 10(8) CFU/animal was determined in pre...
