By using a systematic optimization approach, we determine quantum states of light with definite photon number leading to the best possible precision in optical two-mode interferometry. Our treatment takes into account the experimentally relevant situation of photon losses. Our results thus reveal the benchmark for precision in optical interferometry. Although this boundary is generally worse th...
We show that the cross section for inclusive charm production exhibits geometric scaling in a large range of photon virtualities. In the DESY ep collider HERA kinematic domain the saturation momentum Q(2)(sat)(x) stays below the hard scale micro(2)(c)=4m(2)(c), implying charm production probing mostly the color transparency regime and unitarization effects being almost negligible. We derive our...
We demonstrate the measurement of two-photon excitation (TPE) spectra, used not only for fluorescence but also for photoconversion in green-to-red photoconvertible Kaede, using nonlinear Fourier-transform spectroscopy. It was found that in unphotoconverted Kaede, the TPE spectrum for photoconversion is much different to that for green-fluorescence. This is similar to the difference between the ...
The use of single-wavelength anomalous dispersion (SAD) from S atoms collected in-house to overcome model bias in molecular-replacement (MR) structure determination is demonstrated. The test case considered is a P6(5)22 anti-ssDNA Fab crystal with a theoretical anomalous signal of 0.8% and a diffraction limit of 2.3 A, from which a 360 degrees, 39-fold redundant data set was collected. A nearly...
The emission of light from whispering-gallery modes excited in microscopic spheres is examined. An evanescent wave is produced by total internal reflection of an optical beam at a planar glass-air interface. This evanescent wave is used to excite whispering-gallery modes in single microscopic spheres placed behind the glass-air interface. The intensity of light emitted into the air half-space f...
A photon echo experiment in Tm(3+):YAG is reported that shows, for the first time to the authors' knowledge, the time-domain equivalent of the transition from near- to far-field diffraction, including Talbot self-imaging effects. The experiment demonstrates the huge dispersion capability of photon echoes and opens the way to further exploration of space-time duality.
