In electronic measurements, one observes “signals,” which must be distinctly above the “noise.” Noise induced from outside sources may be reduced by shielding and proper “grounding.” Less noise means greater sensitivity with signal/noise as the figure of merit. However, there exist fundamental sources of noise which no clever circuit can avoid. The intrinsic noise is a result of the thermal jit...
It is well known that classical states of light exhibit shot noise, characteristic of independent or uncorrelated particles. For phase estimation problems, this leads to a shot-noise limited uncertainty of 1/sqrt[N], where N is the number of particles detected. It is also well known that the shot-noise limit is not fundamental: squeezed states and entangled states can be used for sub-shot-noise...
We investigate shot noise for quantum dots whose classical phase space consists of both regular and chaotic regions. The noise is systematically suppressed below the universal value of fully chaotic systems, by an amount which varies with the positions of the leads. We analyze the dynamical origin of this effect by a novel way to incorporate diffractive impurity scattering. The dependence of th...
The noise behavior of bulk CMOS devices is dominated primarily by two noise sources: thermal noise and flicker (1/f) noise. Other sources that are sometimes present in the noise spectrum are shot noise, generation/recombination noise, and “popcorn” noise. Of these sources, thermal noise and shot noise are physically fundamental to the operation of the device and are always present. The quality ...
Experimental investigations of current shot noise in quantum point contacts show a reduction of the noise near the 0.7 anomaly. It is demonstrated that such a reduction naturally arises in a model proposed recently to explain the characteristics of the 0.7 anomaly in quantum point contacts in terms of a quasibound state, due to the emergence of two conducting channels. We calculate the shot noi...
Shot noise of series quantum point contacts forming a sequence of cavities in a two dimensional electron gas are studied theoretically and experimentally. Noise in such a structure originates from local scattering at the point contacts as well as from chaotic motion of the electrons in the cavities. The observed shot noise allows to distinguish between noise of the point contacts and noise from...

— A review is given of the shot-noise properties of metallic, diffusive conductors. The shot noise is one third of the Poisson noise, due to the bimodal distribution of transmission eigenvalues. The same result can be obtained from a semiclassical calculation. Starting from Oseledec’s theorem it is shown that the bimodal distribution is required by Ohm’s law.
We show that intensity and phase noise are highly correlated in a mode-locked Ti:sapphire laser. This allows electro-optic sampling noise, degraded by the combination of 2184 dBc/Hz laser phase noise and birefringent system components, to be reduced 12 dB to the shot noise floor. Two multiorder waveplates can be combined to achieve shot-limited noise while preserving maximum detection efficienc...
