In the diffusion-limited reaction process A+B → ∅ on random scale-free networks, particle density decays as ρ(t) ∼ t−α when ρA(0) = ρB(0), where α > 1 for the degree exponent 2 < γ < 3 and α = 1 for γ ≤ 3. We investigate the reaction on fractal scale-free networks numerically, finding ρ(t) decays slowly with the exponent α ≈ ds/4 < 1, where ds is the spectral dimension of the network.

This paper analyzes datasets with numerical scores that quantify the semantic compositionality of MWEs. We present the results of our analysis of crowdsourced compositionality judgments for noun compounds in three languages. Our goals are to look at the characteristics of the annotations in different languages; to examine intrinsic quality measures for such data; and to measure the impact of fi...

We study implementation issues for spatial convolution lters and their Fourier alternative, with the aim to optimise the accuracy of lter output. We focus on Gaussian scale-space lters and show that there exists a trade-o scale that subdivides the available scale range in the sense that the smaller and larger scales are best extracted by Fourier, respectively spatial ltering.

We conduct beauty contest experiments, using close to 2,000 subjects to study the facial traits of CEOs. In one experiment we use pairs of photographs and find that subjects rate CEO faces as appearing more “competent” and less “likable” than non-CEO faces. Another experiment matches CEOs from large firms against CEOs from smaller firms and finds large-firm CEOs look more competent and likable....

Rating scales are a widely used method for data annotation; however, they present several challenges, such as difficulty in maintaining interand intra-annotator consistency. Best–worst scaling (BWS) is an alternative method of annotation that is claimed to produce high-quality annotations while keeping the required number of annotations similar to that of rating scales. However, the veracity of...

Aqueous foams occur in several industrial applications including food production. One of the challenging issues in foams study is to evaluate the air bubbles stability. This problem is addressed in the present work using sequences of 2D macroscopic images of aqueous foams carried out in a glass column. Despite commercial softwares that are currently used in microscopy, the automatic analysis of...

The two-point correlation function, , of Lyman-forest is found to be large, = 1:8 +1:6 ?1:2 , > 90% conndence level, on the scale of 250-500 km/s for a sample of absorbers (0 < z < 1:3) assembled from HST Key Project Observations. This correlation function is stronger than at high redshift (z > 1:7) where 0:2 for velocities > 250 km/s.
