Semi-aquatic mammals move between two very different media (air and water), and are subject to a greater range of physical forces (gravity, buoyancy, drag) than obligate swimmers or runners. This versatility is associated with morphological compromises that often lead to elevated locomotor energetic costs when compared to fully aquatic or terrestrial species. To understand the basis of these di...
Otter-lambda is a theorem-prover based on an untyped logic with lambda calculus, called Lambda Logic. Otter-lambda is built on Otter, so it uses resolution proof search, supplemented by demodulation and paramodulation for equality reasoning, but it also uses a new algorithm, lambda unification, for instantiating variables for functions or predicates. The basic idea of a typed interpretation of ...
This paper describes some experiments involving the automated theorem-proving program OTTER in the system TRC of illative combinatory logic. We show how OTTER can be steered to find a contradiction in an inconsistent variant of TRC, and present some experimentally discovered identities in TRC.
We characterize Brucella infection in a wild southern sea otter ( Enhydra lutris nereis) with osteolytic lesions similar to those reported in other marine mammals and humans. This otter stranded twice along the central California coast, US over a 1-yr period and was handled extensively at two wildlife rehabilitation facilities, undergoing multiple surgeries and months of postsurgical care. Ulti...
The Japanese otter lived throughout four main Japanese islands, but it has not been observed in the wild since 1979 and was declared extinct in 2012. Although recent taxonomic and molecular phylogenetic studies suggest that it should be treated as an independent species, International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List considers it as subspecies of Lutra lutra. Therefore, the taxonomic s...
Male social congregations (sensu Parish et al. 1997) outside of the breeding season have been documented in ungulates, whales, seals, primates, and carnivores (Ruckstuhl & Neuhaus 2000; Begg 2001; Blundell et al. 2002a,b). Several hypotheses have been proposed to explain why males form social congregations or coalitions. These include increased mating success, territorial defense, predator dete...
