Experiments and simulations reveal that rigid fibers suspended at high concentration in a viscous fluid can be aligned the vorticity direction using shearing flow. Creating alignment requires an oscillatory shear over limited range of strain amplitudes. The suspension must also confined, as only those particles near bounding walls align.

Visual Hull (VH) construction from silhouette images is a popular method of shape estimation. The method, also known as Shape-From-Silhouette (SFS), is used in many applications such as non-invasive 3D model acquisition, obstacle avoidance, and more recently human motion tracking and analysis. One of the limitations of SFS, however, is that the approximated shape can be very coarse when there a...

PURPOSE To present a method for spatiotemporal alignment of in-utero magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) time series acquired during maternal hyperoxia for enabling improved quantitative tracking of blood oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) signal changes that characterize oxygen transport through the placenta to fetal organs. MATERIALS AND METHODS The proposed pipeline for spatiotemporal alignment of...

We present an efficient optimization method to determine the 3D pose of a human from a point cloud. The well-known ICP algorithm is adapted to fit a generic articulated template to the 3D points. Each iteration jointly refines the parameters for rigid alignment, uniform scale as well as all joint angles. In experimental results we demonstrate the effectiveness of this computationally efficient ...

Purpose: This study aimed to investigate radiographic outcomes after posterior spinal fusion (PSF) for pediatric patients younger than 10 years with upper cervical disorders. Methods: Thirteen patients (mean age at surgery, 5.9 years; range, 1 to 9 years) who underwent PSF with a minimum of 2 years of follow-up (mean, 5.8 years) were included. Diagnoses were atlanto-axial instability due to con...

Protein alignment is a challenging applied optimization problem. Superposition methods are based on the maximization of a score function with respect to rigid-body modifications of relative positions. The problem of score maximization can be modelled as a continuous nonsmooth optimization problem (low order-value optimization (LOVO)). This allows one to define practical and convergent methods t...

[4] V. Blanz and T. Vetter, “A morphable model for the synthesis of 3d faces,” in Computer graphics proceedings, annual conference series. Association for Computing Machinery SIGGRAPH, 1999, pp. 187–194. Introduction We propose a novel 3D Dynamic Morphable Model which utilizes the Dynamic 3D FACS Dataset (D3DFACS) [1]. Compared to the technique proposed in [1], the model provides a more accurat...

We present an approach for Maximum Likelihood estimation of correspondence and alignment parameters that benefits from the representational skills of graphs. We pose the problem as one of mixture modelling within the framework of the Expectation-Maximization algorithm. Our mixture model encompasses a Gaussian density to model the point-position errors and a Bernoulli density to model the struct...

The first efforts on treating hip fractures concentrated on alignment of fracture fragments by traction and closed reduction. The reduction was maintained by long term traction, spica casts or internal fixation. However, despite the most accurate anatomic alignment and most rigid fragment fixation, many patients failed to regain normal use of their hips. Non-union of the femoral neck, avascular...
