Staphylococcal cassette chromosome mec (SCCmec) types and Panton-Valentine leukocidin (PVL) gene carriage were compared among suspected community-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus MRSA (CA-MRSA) and health care-associated MRSA (HA-MRSA) isolates. CA-MRSA isolates carried the SCCmec type IV complex, and most were PVL positive. The HA-MRSA isolates carried the SCCmec type II ...

A search was made for Methicillin Resistant Strains of Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA) among staph aureus cultures isolated at a teaching hospital in Karachi. Of 100 staphylococcus aureus isolated in 1987-88, 5 were MRSA, four from admitted patients and one from outpatient. These MRSA were resistant to Gentamicin as well as to other antibiotics. The presence of MRSA in the in-patients is a serious...

Livestock-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (LA-MRSA) have been isolated from a number of livestock species and persons involved in animal production. We investigated the prevalence of LA-MRSA in fattening turkeys and people living on farms that house fattening turkeys. Eighteen (90%) of 20 investigated flocks were positive for MRSA, and on 12 of the farms 22 (37·3%) of 59 ...

Community-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA) are increasingly causing infective endocarditis over the past decade. Here we report a healthy man who developed a severe acute infective endocarditis with systemic embolism caused by CA-MRSA. The strain was recovered from repeated blood cultures and was characterized using molecular detection and genotyping. The S. aure...

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus has been a major problem in the worldwide health care centres and institutions since the last 60 years . It has been a major pathogen responsible for nosocomial infections and recently has created life-threatening situations. Penicillin resistance was seen a few years after the drug was introduced. To solve this problem another drug of the penicillin ...

Introduction: Biofilm formation in Staphylococcus aureus is a major virulence factor. Both methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA) and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) are common causes of community- and hospital-acquired infections and are associated with biofilm formation. The status of biofilm-forming genes has not been explored in Jordanian nasal carriers of S. ...

A nasal carriage survey for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in an intensive care unit detected four strains of MRSA with reduced susceptibility to vancomycin. The vanA gene was found in two of these vancomycin-intermediate Staphylococcus aureus (VISA) strains. The absence of selective vancomycin pressure might have resulted in reduced expression of the resistant gene.

OBJECTIVE To determine the antibiogram of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in patients with diabetes. METHODS The study was carried out in the Microbiology Department of Clinical and Research Laboratory, Baqai Institute of Diabetology and Endocrinology (BIDE) from January 2012 to December 2012. All samples received in the laboratory were processed ...

Staphylococcus aureus and coagulase-negative Staphylococcus (CoNS) are frequently found in nosocomial environments as the main pathogen in several infections. In 1961, reports of nosocomial S. aureus resistant to methicillin, the drug of choice against penicillin-resistant strains, required new alternatives and vancomycin started being used to treat infections caused by methicillin-resistant S....

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus colonizes humans and other animals such as swine. Livestock-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (LA-MRSA) sequence type 5 (ST5) isolates are a public concern due to their pathogenicity and ability to acquire mobile genetic elements. This report presents draft genome sequences for 63 LA-MRSA ST5 isolates in the United States.
