In this paper we summarize our recently proposed work on the information theory analysis of nonlinear regenerative channels. We discuss fundamental assumptions in our modelling approach and we show that through proper manipulation of the regenerator properties Shannon capacities higher than the limits of the corresponding linear channels can be achieved.
We demonstrate the folded ultrafast nonlinear interferometer (FUNI) as a 3R all-optical regenerator. Faraday rotation provides inherent polarization stabilization, and the optical fiber nonlinear medium provides ultrafast operation and switching window tunability. We demonstrate 3R regeneration of 10-Gbit/s data with 5-pJ pulse switching energy and 4-ps timing-jitter tolerance.

We review the application of the Wigner-Weisskopf model to the two-channel decay problem for the neutral K meson system in the resolvent formalism. The residues in the pole approximation are not orthogonal, leading to additional interference terms in the K S − K L 2π channel. We show that these terms may be detectable experimentally in the beam emitted from a regenerator.

We present the first experimental demonstration of an asynchronous digital optical regenerator at 42.67 Gbit/s.
