Reflex sympathetic dystrophy is a syndrome characterized by superficial pain and tenderness associated with swelling, vasomotor instability, and dystrophic changes of the skin. In children, it is rarely reported and is felt to have a more benign and self-limited course. This case illustrates that, in children, reflex sympathetic dystrophy can occur without any previous history of trauma, and ma...
A 54-year-old woman developed signs and symptoms consistent with reflex sympathetic dystrophy in her left upper extremity following arterial puncture. Diagnosis was confirmed by bone scan, and sympathetic blockade with intravenous regional bretylium completely relieved her severe, intractable pain.
This report describes three patients with reflex sympathetic dystrophy complicating carpal tunnel syndrome. Pain disproportionate and more diffuse than that commonly associated with carpal tunnel syndrome suggested the associated diagnosis in each patient and facilitated prompt management.
Reflex sympathetic dystrophy syndrome (RSDS) complicating antiepileptic drug (AED) therapy is not well acknowledged in the neurologic literature. We report 4 patients with reflex sympathetic dystrophy that occurred while they were receiving AEDs. All patients had shoulder and hand involvement, which in 2 was bilateral, and 1 had ipsilateral foot involvement. Two patients did not respond to a ch...
Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (previously known as reflex sympathetic dystrophy, RSD) is a condition presenting with burning, nondermatomal pain associated with hyperhidrosis, intermittent oedema and discolouration and with evidence of mechanical and thermal allodynia. Conventional treatment is with sympathetic blockade produced by local anaesthetic injection around the appropriate sympathetic...
Intravenous regional guanethedine (IVRG), using the Bier's block technique, was given to relieve pain in a 62 year old Indian woman suffering from reflex sympathetic dystrophy. The patient obtained complete pain relief with 2 injections and has remained pain-free for 18 months.
UNLABELLED Existing evidence indicates that pain catastrophizing is associated with enhanced pain reports and lower pain threshold/tolerance levels, but is not significantly related to nociceptive flexion reflex (NFR) threshold in healthy and clinical pain samples. This suggests pain catastrophizing may modulate pain threshold at a supraspinal level without influencing descending modulation of ...
Surgery on extremities suffering from reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD) is generally avoided because it is presumed that RSD will recur or worsen. In order to study this problem we analyzed our patients. The affected limb of 47 patients suffering from RSD was operated on for various reasons. If possible, the operation was postponed until the signs and symptoms of RSD decreased at rest and perf...
In May 2016, the USA athletes of NBA speculated in television that the pain sensation might result necessarily from the post-sensory nociceptive-sympathetic coupling. Besides the common knowledge from causalgia and reflex sympathetic dystrophy as sympathetically maintained pain, it is herein reinforced the post-sensory differentiation of nociception and pruritus as supporting evidence for them,...
