A rare type of bezoar composed of coconut matting was found in the stomach of a caucasian man. The exact identity of the fibres was established by scanning electron microscopy, x-ray energy spectroscopy, and microscopic infrared spectroscopy. This report illustrates the importance of these techniques for identifying the nature of foreign material.

We describe a patient with inflammatory pseudotumour of the lung. He was a young man who presented with haemotysis and the chest X-ray and computerized tomography were indicative of a nonbenign lesion in the right upper lobe. Excision biopsy confirmed the diagnosis of inflammatory myofibroblastic pseudotumour of the lung. This is a rare inflammatory nonneoplastic condition commonly affecting ch...

A 29-year old man presented with chronic cough. A chest X-ray revealed several faint round opacities in the right upper zone (Fig. 1a). Computed tomography showed a mass occluding the right main pulmonary artery (Fig. 1b). Positron emission tomography showed increased activity (Fig. 1c). He underwent median sternotomy and intrapericardial right pneumonectomy. Histopathology revealed an intravas...

A 52-year-old man was admitted to our hospital in June 2008 presenting abnormal tumor lesions along the left pleura on chest X-ray. The needle-biopsied specimen of the left pleura proved the biphasic type of malignant mesothelioma. However, he complained of acute abdominal pain 7 days after the diagnosis. Chest X-ray revealed free air below the right diaphragm. Emergency surgery revealed a 4-cm...

A 77-year-old-man who had been treated for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) was referred to our hospital for further examination of a chest X-ray abnormality. The chest X-ray showed consolidation in the right upper and middle lung field. Chest computed tomography showed an airspace consolidation extending subpleurally and nonsegmentally without nodular lesions. The tentative diagnos...

Skin folds and pneumothorax can often be confused on chest radiographs. We present the chest X-ray (Fig. 1 A) of a 71-yearold man with cancer who presented due to a deterioration in his general health status, where a skin fold was observed in the left hemithorax. Computed tomography (B) confirmed the absence of pneumothorax. The skin fold (A) appears as an interface (arrowhead) in the lung fiel...

Outpatient drainage therapy is generally indicated for spontaneous pneumothoraces. A 63-year-old man, who had been attacked by a bull sustaining injuries on the right side of his chest, was referred to the emergency room with dyspnea. His chest X-ray showed a small pneumothorax. The next day, a chest X-ray demonstrated that his pneumothorax had worsened, although no hemothorax was identified. O...

This report describes a 23-year-old man who presented with multiple joint deformities as a consequence of multiple painless intra-articular fractures.Blood counts, biochemistry, and nerve conduction velocity were all normal. X-ray studies showed joint destruction in hips, elbows and knees. We concluded that he is a case of congenital insensitivity to pain culminating in multiple charcot joints.

In this talk I will outline first passage time analysis for animals undertaking complex movement patterns while searching for prey. I will extend the analysis to complex heterogeneous environments to assess the effects of man-made linear landscape features on functional responses in wolves searching for elk. A heavily calcified left atrial myxoma in a man aged 53 was diagnosed from the plain chest x-ray film and confirmed by echocardiography. There was also moderate mitral regurgitation caused by a floppy mitral valve. Before a systemic embolus is considered to have arisen from a floppy mitral valve, echocardiography must be performed.
