We have studied large areas of (√3×√3)R30° graphene commensurate with a Pt(111) substrate. A combination of experimental techniques with ab initio density functional theory indicates that this structure is related to a reconstruction at the Pt surface, consisting of an ordered vacancy network formed in the outermost Pt layer and a graphene layer covalently bound to the Pt substrate. The formati...

Angle-resolved photoemission has been utilized to study the surface electronic structure of 1 / 3 monolayer of Sn on Ge(111) in both the room-temperature (sqrt[3]xsqrt[3] )R30 degrees phase and the low-temperature ( 3x3) charge-density-wave phase. The results reveal a gap opening around the ( 3x3) Brillouin zone boundary, suggesting a Peierls-like transition despite the well-documented lack of ...

First-principles surface phase diagrams reveal that epitaxial monolayer graphene films on the Si side of 3C-SiC(111) can exist as thermodynamically stable phases in a narrow range of experimentally controllable conditions, defining a path to the highest quality graphene films. Our calculations are based on a van der Waals corrected density functional. The full, experimentally observed (6sqrt[3]...

In this note we take a first step towards the analysis of collusion in markets with spatial competition, focusing on the case of pure location choices. We find that collusion can only be profitable if a coalition contains more than half of all players. This result holds for location games played in k-dimensional Euclidean space as long as consumers are distributed via atomless density functions...

Graphene films prepared by heating the SiC(0001̄) surface (the C-face of the {0001} surfaces) in a vacuum or in a Si-rich environment are compared. It is found that different interface structures occur for the two situations. The former yields a well known 3 × 3 reconstructed interface, whereas the latter produces an interface with √ 43 ×√43-R ± 7.6◦ symmetry. This structure is shown to contain ...

We have performed an experimental structure determination of the ordered p(sqrt[3] x sqrt[3])R30 degrees structures of chlorine and iodine on Au{111} using low-energy electron diffraction (LEED). Despite great similarities in the structure of the underlying substrate, which shows only minor deviations from the bulk positions in both cases, chlorine and iodine are found to adsorb in different ad...

Transmission electron diffraction (TED) combined with direct methods have been used to study the sqrt[3]xsqrt[3]R30 degrees reconstruction on the polar (111) surface of MgO and refine the valence charge distribution. The surface is nonstoichiometric and is terminated by a single magnesium atom. A charge-compensating electron hole is localized in the next oxygen layer and there is a nominal char...

We investigate the impact of knowledge spillovers and R&D cooperation on innovation activities in three German regions. We begin by estimating the knowledge-production function in order to test for interregional difference with regard to the efficiency of innovation activities. In a second step, we analyze the contribution of spillovers from R&D effort of other private firms and of public resea...
