We report a patient who sustained massive catastrophic pulmonary fat embolism while undergoing surgery for intramedullary nail of femur. Application of percutaneous cardiopulmonary support, in our view, saved the patient from cardiopulmonary collapse.

Background: Lophomonas blattarum is protozoan generally parasitizes in the intestinal tracts of some arthropods. It can infect adults and children with unspecific respiratory symptoms. We aimed to investigate the frequency of Lophomonas blattarum in children with respiratory symptoms in North East of Iran. Materials and Methods: One hundred fifty-six children with respiratory symptoms were inv...

Introduction & Objective: passive respiratory exercises are used to prevent from accumulation of secretions, lung collapse and the incidence of ventilator-associated pneumonia in ICUs. This  study is aimed to compare the effects of manual percussion and mechanical vibrations on cardiopulmonary functions of mechanically ventilated patients. Materials &Methods: This randomized crossover clinical...

Lung collapse is considered the primary mechanism that limits nitrogen absorption and decreases the risk of decompression sickness in deep-diving marine mammals. Continuous arterial partial pressure of oxygen profiles in a free-diving female California sea lion (Zalophus californianus) revealed that (i) depth of lung collapse was near 225 m as evidenced by abrupt changes in during descent a...

STUDY OBJECTIVES Collapse therapy for pulmonary tuberculosis involved placement of various materials to occupy space and keep the lung collapsed. Complications are encountered decades later. PATIENTS AND METHODS Between 1980 and 1997, we treated 31 patients with a history of pulmonary tuberculosis in whom collapse therapy had been used and who later developed complications related to their tr...

Collapse therapy, as a term, embraces a variety of procedures and has developed rapidly in recent years. The literally enormous number of publications upon the subject testifies to the interest in it. The naturally radical see in it the greatest therapeutic advance of the century, while even the most conservative concede it a great step in advance. No one dealing with pulmonary tuberculosis can...

The effects of bronchial occlusion on the pulmonary circulation were studied in anesthetized cats and dogs. Immediately after occlusion, blood flow fell rapidly at normal pulmonary arterial pressure (—71% cats, —54% dogs), and in constant flow perfusion experiments, perfusion pressure rose (+50% cats, +28% dogs). These resistance changes were reversed by vasodilator drugs, alkali, or perfusion ...

Reexpansion pulmonary edema is a rare complication resulting from rapid emptying of air or liquid from the pleural cavity performed by either thoracentesis or chest drainage. Despite being infrequent, mortality may occur in up to 20% of cases and is attributed to the abrupt reduction in pleural pressure, especially as a result of extensive pneumothorax drainage or when there is long-term pulmon...

Isolated left ventricular non-compaction (LVNC) is a rare congenital anomaly. It is characterized by numerous prominent ventricular trabecullations and deep intertrabecular recesses. The incidences of associated cardiovascular complication and congenital heart disease are high. It is associated with congestive heart failure, ventricular arrhythmia, embolic events, and distinctive facial dysmorp...
