Propionibacterium acnes is a major skin commensal and is associated with acne vulgaris, the most common skin disease. Here we report the draft genome sequences of two P. acnes strains, the type strain ATCC6919 and an antibiotic-resistant strain, HL411PA1.

We report the case of a 37-year-old previously healthy woman diagnosed with a breast abscess due to Propionibacterium avidum after breast reduction surgery. This case emphasizes the potential pathogenicity and morbidity associated with this commensal skin organism.

The presence of diol dehydratase and glycerol dehydratase was shown in several bacteria of Enterobacteriaceae grown anaerobically on 1,2-propanediol and on glycerol, respectively. Diol dehydratases of Enterobacteriaceae were immunologically similar, but distinct from that of Propionibacterium freudenreichii.

Anaerobic bacteria from the colon of laboratory mice were enumerated and isolated using strict anaerobic techniques. Direct microscopic counts revealed 4.4 X 10(10) organisms in each gram (wet weight) of colon contents.
