The effectiveness of SYTOX Green nucleic acid stain for measuring bacterial viability was tested on starved populations of Escherichia coli and Salmonella typhimurium. This stain underestimates the fraction of dead cells within starved populations containing cells with damaged nucleic acids or membranes. Its application to natural samples should be considered with caution.

In this paper we develop a mathematical model for the dynamics of a linear plate with piezoelectric actuation. This model can then be used to design controllers with the goal of achieving a desired shape of the plate. This control scheme can be used for several applications, e.g., vibration control in structures or shape control for high precision structures like inflatable space reflectors. Th...

Port-wine stain (PWS) birthmarks are congenital, low-flow vascular malformations of the skin. Lasers are the modality of choice for the treatment of PWS birthmarks, and for most patients the pulsed-dye laser in conjunction with epidermal cooling offers the greatest efficacy and safety. Other light devices, including the 532-nm frequency-doubled Nd:YAG laser, intense pulsed light, 1064-nm Nd:YAG...

We used a novel phase-resolved optical Doppler tomographic (ODT) technique with very high flow-velocity sensitivity (10microm/s) and high spatial resolution (10microm) to image blood flow in port-wine stain (PWS) birthmarks in human skin. In addition to the regular ODT velocity and structural images, we use the variance of blood flow velocity to map the PWS vessels. Our device combines ODT and ...

Genetic variation in natural populations represents the raw material for phenotypic diversity. Species-wide characterization of genetic variants is crucial to have a deeper insight into the genotype-phenotype relationship. With the advent of new sequencing strategies and more recently the release of long-read sequencing platforms, it is now possible to explore the genetic diversity of any non-m...

The traditional production of wine vinegar is a lengthy process with little or no microbiological control. The aim of this study was to shorten the acetification process via three different strategies: changes in wood type; barrel shape; and the inoculation of an Acetobacter pasteurianus pure culture. The barrel shape was modified by constructing two prototypes with higher liquid-air interface....

OBJECTIVES This study was performed to consider the clinical experience of surgical outcome of single port access (SPA) laparoscopic myomectomy according to suturing methods. METHODS The authors operated with 2 suturing method in SPA laparoscopic myomectomy for 246 patients and compared the surgical outcomes. RESULTS The some significant difference of surgical outcome according to two sutur...

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Port-wine stains (PWSs) are capillary vascular malformations that are commonly resistant to treatment. Currently, the pulsed dye laser (PDL) is the treatment of choice. Multiple treatments are required and complete blanching after laser irradiation is rarely achieved. We review current therapeutic modalities for PWSs and recent developments for enhanced clearance. ST...

Aim: To evaluate the efficacy of latanoprost (Xalatan) as adjunctive therapy in port wine stain related paediatric glaucoma. Methods: A retrospective non-randomised study. Patients with previous surgical intervention and medical treatment were included. Measurements were recorded from clinic and/or examination under anaesthetic (EUA) visits. A successful outcome was considered to be patients wh...
