This work reports the synthesis and characterization of the first water-soluble iridium porphyrin, iridium(iii) diaqua porphyrin [Ir(III)(TSPP)(OH(2))(2)](3-) (1, TSPP = tetra-p-sulfonatophenyl porphyrin). The structure of 1 was unequivocally determined by single crystal X-ray analysis. Benzo-18-crown-6-ether is essential for producing single crystals suitable for X-ray analysis.

Photocatalytic CO(2) reduction has been studied for two dyads with porphyrin covalently attached to rhenium tricarbonyl bipyridine moieties, and on separate components consisting of [Re(CO)(3)(Picoline)Bpy](+) and either zinc porphyrin or zinc chlorin. OFET devices based on single-crystals of two different porphyrin derivatives display excellent mobilities of 2.57 and 0.48 cm(2) V(-1) s(-1). Although they generate similar J-aggregations, the dramatic enhancement of mobility obtained using porphyrin 1 is due to the well-confined secondary structural arrangement caused by substituents on the porphyrin ring.
