Biotinylated anti-C-reactive protein (CRP) species were attached to the surface of streptavidin-coated magnetic beads (MB) and avidin-coated polystyrene microspheres/beads (PSB) entrapping a large number of electrogenerated chemiluminescence (ECL) labels ( approximately 10(9) Ru(bpy)(3)[B(C(6)F(5))(4)](2)/bead) to form anti-CRP<-->MB and Ru(II) subsetPSB/avidin<-->anti-CRP conjugates, respectiv...

A single campaign of mass treatment for bancroftian filariasis with diethylcarbamazine (DEC) in Makunduchi, a town in Zanzibar, United Republic of Tanzania, combined with elimination of mosquito breeding in pit latrines with polystyrene beads was followed by a progressive decline over a 5-year period in the microfilarial rate from 49% to 3%. Evidence that vector control had contributed to this ...

Radical solvent-free suspension polymerization of styrene with 3-mercapto hexyl-methacrylate (MHM) as the branching monomer has been carried out using 2,2′-azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) as the initiator to prepare branched polymer beads of high purity. The molecular weight and branching structure of the polymers have been characterized by triple detection size exclusion chromatography (TD-SEC),...

In the investigation of chemical pollutants, such as PAHs (Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons) at low concentration in aqueous medium, Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS) stands for an alternative to the inherent low cross-section of normal Raman scattering. Indeed, SERS is a very sensitive spectroscopic technique due to the excitation of the surface plasmon modes of the nanostructured metal...

This paper reports the results of an experimental investigation into the effects of incorporating varying amounts of expanded polystyrene beads on the engineering properties of high-strength concrete. It was observed that a density reduction of 8.3% caused compressive strength, tensile strength and modulus of elasticity to reduce by 48%, 39% and 15%, respectively. Drying shrinkage was marginall...

Polystyrene particles of different sizes are optically trapped with a gaussian beam from a He-Cd laser operating at 442 nm. The particles are observed to exhibit luminescence after a certain trapping time followed by an escape from the optical trap. The observed luminescence is explained in terms of the photodegradation of the polystyrene backbone. It is speculated that these chemical modificat...

The immobilization of synthetic analogues of the [FeFe]-hydrogenase, [FeFe]H(2)ase, enzyme active site on polyethyleneglycol-rich polystyrene beads is described. Using the reactivity of the amine termini of the PEG chains with carboxylates incorporated into (mu-SRS)[Fe(CO)(3)](2) or (mu-SR)(2)[Fe(CO)(3)](2) derivative, nu(CO)IR signatures can be used to interrogate the structure and properties ...

The synthesis and characterisation of a new, highly luminescent inorganic cluster complex, (Bu4N)2[Mo6I8(NO3)6], are described. The complex possesses labile nitrato ligands and is therefore a useful precursor for the design of new luminescent materials. To exemplify this, functionalised polystyrene beads have been utilised as "polymeric ligands" to immobilise the molybdenum cluster complex.

We demonstrate label-free detection of lipid vesicles and polystyrene beads freely diffusing in aqueous solution using surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). The signals observed enable real-time identification and monitoring of individual particles interacting with the SERS substrate. SERS is demonstrated as a label-free method capable of monitoring transient species in solution on the mill...

Colloidal crystals of polystyrene (PS) beads self-assembled on Pt electrode were used as a sacrificial template to electrosynthesis thin films of macroporous Layered Double Hydroxides (LDH). Such nanostructured materials display a high internal surface area and porosity leading to enhanced electrochemical performance.
