The cross-stream migration of a deformable drop in a unidirectional shear flow of a second-order fluid is considered. Expressions for the particle velocity due to the separate effects of deformation and viscoelastic rheology are obtained. The direction and magnitude of migration are calculated for the particular cases of Poiseuille flow and simple shear flow and compared with experimental data.
We present the results of an experimental study on the transition to spiral vortices in flow between concentric counter-rotating cylinders in the presence of an axial through-flow, i.e., in spiral Poiseuille flow. The experiments were performed in an apparatus having an aspect ratio Gamma=L/d=22.8 ( L axial length, d gap width between cylinders) and end plates enabling an in and outflow of mass...
In the classical plane Couette flow, certain 3D steady solution (the so-called lower branch state) of the Navier-Stokes equations has a nontrivial limit as the Reynolds number approaches infinity [8]. The limit is a shear of the form (U(y, z), 0, 0) in velocity variables. On the other hand, all the shears of this form are solutions of the corresponding 3D Euler equations. This note derives a ne...
The Chebyshev tau method is examined in detail for a variety of eigenvalue problems arising in hydrodynamic stability studies, particularly those of Orr-Sommerfeld type. We concentrate on determining the whole of the top end of the spectrum in parameter ranges beyond those often explored. The method employing a Chebyshev representation of the fourth derivative operator, D 4, is compared with th...
Velocity fields for Poiseuille flow through tubes having general cross section are calculated using a path integral method involving the first-passage times of random walks in the interior of the cross sectional domain B of the pipe. This method is applied to a number of examples where exact results are available and to more complicated geometries of practical interest. These examples include a...
Two recent works have shown that at small Knudsen number (K) the pressure and temperature profiles in plane Poiseuille flow exhibit a different qualitative behavior from the profiles obtained by the Navier-Stokes equations. Tij and Santos [J. Stat. Phys. 76, 1399 (1994)] used the Bhatnagar-Gross-Kook model to show that the temperature profile is bimodal and the pressure profile is nonconstant. ...
Stability of the flow of incompressible viscous fluid in a circular pipe is studied numerically. A perturbation consisting of finite-amplitude two-dimensional and infinitesimal three-dimensional parts is imposed on the basic flow. The temporal evolution of the perturbation is analyzed by direct numerical calculation of the Navier–Stokes equations. The two-dimensional disturbances are independen...
Lattice Boltzmann simulations are used to explore the behavior of liquid crystals subject to Poiseuille flow. In the nematic regime at low shear rates we find two possible steady state configurations of the director field. The selected state depends on both the shear rate and the history of the sample. For both director configurations there is clear evidence of shear-thinning, a decrease in the...
In this paper, the multi-step differential transform method (MDTM), one of the most effective method, is implemented to compute an approximate solution of the system of nonlinear differential equations governing the problem. It has been attempted to show the reliability and performance of the MDTM in comparison with the numerical method (fourth-order Runge–Kutta) and other analytical methods su...
