For the present work, we introduce and evaluate a novel Bayesian syntactic shallow parser that is able to perform robust detection of pairs of subject-object and subject-direct object-indirect object for a given verb, in a natural language sentence. The shallow parser infers on the correct subject-object pairs based on knowledge provided by Bayesian network learning from annotated text corpora....

Written in English. This thesis investigates different aspects of transition-based syntactic parsing of natural language text, where we view syntactic parsing as the process of mapping sentences in unrestricted tex...

In this paper, I revise generalized phrase structure grammar (GPSG) linguistic theory so that it is more tractable and linguistically constrained. Revised GPSG is also easier to understand, use, and implement. I provide an account of topicalization, ex-plicative pronouns, and parasitic gaps in the revised system and conclude with suggestions for efficient parser design.

We describe a simple approach for integrating shallow and deep parsing. We use phrase structure bracketing obtained from the Collins parser as filters to guide deep parsing. Our experiments demonstrate that our technique yields substantial gains in speed along with modest improvements in accuracy.

This dissertation is concerned with the creation of training data and the development of probability models for statistical parsing of English with Combinatory Categorial Grammar (CCG). Parsing, or syntactic analysis, is a prerequisite for semantic interpretation, and forms therefore an integral part of any system which requires natural language understanding. Since almost all naturally occurri...

A natural language parser that could extract noun phrases for all medical texts would be of great utility in analyzing content for information retrieval. We discuss the extraction of noun phrases from MEDLINE, using a general parser not tuned specifically for any medical domain. The noun phrase extractor is made up of three modules: tokenization; part-of-speech tagging; noun phrase identificati...

Due to recent development in the area of computational formalisms for linguistic representation, the task of designing a parser for a speciied natural language is now shifted to the problem of designing its grammar in certain formal ways. This paper describes the results of a project whose aim was to design a formal grammar for modern Hebrew. Such a formal grammar has never been developed befor...

In this paper we describe a method for the efficient parsing of real-life Greek texts at the surface syntactic level. A grammar consisting of non-recursive regular expressions describing Greek phrase structure has been compiled into a cascade of finite state transducers used to recognize syntactic constituents. The implemented parser lends itself to applications where large scale text processin...

We present in this paper the development process and the evaluation procedure of a Brazilian Portuguese discourse parser called DiZer. Based on Rhetorical Structure Theory, DiZer is a symbolic cue phrase-based analyzer that makes use of discourse templates learned from a corpus of scientific texts to identify and build the discourse structure of texts. DiZer evaluation shows satisfactory result...

The existing applications in Natural Language Process (NLP) weren’t reliable. Indeed, many complex phenomena are not treated completely such as relatives, juxtaposition, ellipsis and the coordination, essentially for Arabic grammar. In fact, the problems encountered relate to the choice of the formalism and the parser validating the constructed grammar. Therefore, our work aims to appreciate th...
