The platinum group of metals (PGMs) possess a range of unique chemical and physical properties and are increasingly finding important uses in a wide variety of environmentally-related technologies (eg. catalytic converters, fuel cells, electronics). The typical ore grade for PGM mineralisation is similar to gold (g/t) but the processing is more akin to base metals (at percent). The typical sche...

BACKGROUND Peptidoglycan monomer (PGM), which was originally prepared by biosynthesis from culture fluids of penicillin-treated Brevibacterium divaricatum, is an immunostimulator, the activities of which might be improved by addition of zinc (Zn) to the basic molecule. METHODS To test the possible cytotoxic effects of this new analogue, we analyzed the ability of PGM-Zn and PGM to change the ...

The sequencing chips and kits of the Ion Torrent Personal Genome Machine (PGM), which employs semiconductor technology to measure pH changes in polymerization events, have recently been upgraded. The quality of PGM sequences has not been reassessed, and results have not been compared in the context of a gene-targeted microbial ecology study. To address this, we compared sequence profiles across...

Here, we report the genome sequence of Yersinia pestis strain Cadman, an attenuated strain lacking the pgm locus. Y. pestis is the causative agent of plague and generally must be worked with under biosafety level 3 (BSL-3) conditions. However, strains lacking the pgm locus are considered safe to work with under BSL-2 conditions.

BACKGROUND Molecular genetic testing is recommended for diagnosis of inherited cardiac disease, to guide prognosis and treatment, but access is often limited by cost and availability. Recently introduced high-throughput bench-top DNA sequencing platforms have the potential to overcome these limitations. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS We evaluated two next-generation sequencing (NGS) platforms...

BACKGROUND Factor V Leiden (FVL) and prothrombin gene mutation (PGM) are common inherited thrombophilias. Retrospective studies variably suggest a link between maternal FVL/PGM and placenta-mediated pregnancy complications including pregnancy loss, small for gestational age, pre-eclampsia and placental abruption. Prospective cohort studies provide a superior methodologic design but require larg...

The gene organization and transcription of the Agrobacterium glg operon differ from those in other bacteria. Agrobacterium tumefaciens A348 contains a 9.1-kb gene cluster harboring genes for glycogen metabolism. The nucleotide sequence and gene organization of a region containing ADP-glucose pyrophosphorylase (glgC), glycogen synthetase (glgA), and phosphoglucomutase (pgm) genes have been previ...

The Ion Torrent Personal Genome Machine (PGM) is a new sequencing platform that substantially differs from other sequencing technologies by measuring pH rather than light to detect polymerisation events. Using re-sequencing datasets, we comprehensively characterise the biases and errors introduced by the PGM at both the base and flow level, across a combination of factors, including chip densit...

Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato DC3481, a Tn5-induced mutant of the tomato pathogen DC3000, cannot grow and elicit disease symptoms on tomato seedlings. It also cannot grow on minimal medium containing malate, citrate, or succinate, three of the major organic acids found in tomatoes. We report here that this mutant also cannot use, as a sole carbon and/or energy source, a wide variety of hexose...
