A lung function study was carried out to determine the relative effect of rice husk and saw dust on mill workers. The study consisted of 195 subjects of which 56 rice mill workers, 71 saw mill workers and 68 controls of similar age, sex and socio-economic condition. FVC was significantly reduced in saw-mill workers compared to both the controls and rice mill workers. Both FEV1 and PEFR/min were...

In order to assess the effects of malnutrition on the growth of lung function, 376 Indian schoolchildren aged 6-12 yrs were studied. Peak expiratory flow rate (PEFR) was measured with a Wright peak flow meter, and nutritional status assessed by calculation of the percentage predicted height for age (HFA) and weight for height (WFH) using Harvard standards. After standardizing for height and sex...

Intravenous magnesium sulfate (IVMg) has shown beneficial effects in acute asthma in adults because of its potential to reverse the bronchospasm. The results are however, not consistent in all studies. With this background the present randomized, placebo-controlled trial was conducted in children of 6-18 years age. The cases in study and control groups (15 and 16 patients, respectively), select...

Forced vital capacity (FVC), FEV1, FEV1/FVC ratio (FEV1%), forced expiratory flow (FEF 200-1200), and peak expiratory flow rate (PEFR) were measured in 143 male and 117 female healthy Ethiopians. Multiple linear regression analysis was used to correlate these indices with anthropometric variables. The results show that FVC, FEV1, and PEFR give significant regressions with age and height in both...

Among 698 Birmingham factory workers, Asian men (n = 75) tended to have lower peak expiratory flow rates (PEFR) than black (n = 156) or white (n = 138) men when age, height and smoking habits were accounted for. This trend reached statistical significance in Asian females (n = 20), despite a small sample size. There were no significant differences in PEFR between blacks and whites of either sex.

Results Patients were median age 70 years, and 34% were female; no significant differences between nesiritide or placebo patients existed. Median baseline PEFR was 225 l/min (interquartile range [IQR]: 160 to 300 l/min) and increased to 230 l/min (2.2% increase; IQR: 170 to 315 l/min) by hour 1, 250 l/min (11.1% increase; IQR: 180 to 340 l/min) by hour 6, and 273 l/min (21.3% increase; IQR: 200...

Results of measurement of Peak Expiratory Flow Rate PEFR made on 1315 healthy persons ranging in age from 7-67 who attended a Medical Exhibition in the city of Coimbatore is analysed. Wide variation in parameters in Indian subjects observed, is attributed to regional variation in population and climate. Also, data collected on highly selected groups like students, sportsmen may not be truly rep...

Buffalo health study concluded that pulmonary function is a long-term predictor for overall survival rates. It is essential to be involved in physical activity or sports which help in achieving better lung function. Cross sectional observation study was conducted to determine if yoga and athletic activity (running) are associated with better lung functions as compared to subjects with sedentary...

SUMMARY: Exposure to cement dust has been linked to lung function impairment. However, there are few such studies in Nigeria. The main aim of this study was to assess the post-work Peak Expiratory Flow Rate (PEFR) of workers in a cement company. Sixty workers in a cement factory were randomly selected; thirty were regarded as workers exposed to cement dust and the remaining as unexposed workers...

In primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD), chest physiotherapy for airway clearance is essential. Exercise and inhaled beta2-agonists can produce bronchodilation thereby augmenting physiotherapy. However, both can also cause bronchoconstriction, and the effects of these stimuli in PCD are not known. In a preliminary study, the mean coefficients of variation for forced expiratory volume in one second ...
