During biogas production, the rate-determining step for the conversion of complex organic matter is the hydrolysis. Different pretreatment methods aid in facilitating the anaerobic digestion by increasing the rate of organic matter hydrolysis. This in effect results in enhanced production of biogas and aids in waste stabilization as well as disposal. This review gives an overview of the methods...

INDIA IS FACING serious environmental problems such as waste1 ,water and air pollution due to the fast growth of urbanisation and industrialisation. The subject of solid waste management (SWM) in Hyderabad (India) represents one of particular interest for this 23rd WEDC conference on ‘partnership and innovation’. This paper will represent a unique scheme which is based on a combination of partn...

The composition of municipal wastewater and sewage sludge reflects the use and proliferation of elements and contaminants within society. In Sweden, official statistics show that concentrations of toxic metals in municipal sewage sludge have steadily decreased, by up to 90 %, since the 1970s, due to environmental programmes and statutory limits on metals in sludge and soil. Results from long-te...

The paper presents the results of two full-scale applications of the anaerobic co-digestion process of waste activated sludge together with the organic fraction of municipal solid wastes. The experiences were carried out at Viareggio and Treviso wastewater treatment plants (Italy). In the first plant, 3 tons per day of source sorted OFMSW were co-digested with waste activated sludge, increasing...

Feedlot waste contains essentially all the necessary nutrients for batch fermentation with the fungus Trichoderma viride. The organism utilizes two-thirds of the carbohydrate in feedlot waste while elaborating cellulase in quantities comparable to commercial preparations. Essentially odor-free, the fermented waste contains all of the original nitrogen but has 24% less organic matter.

An agar sediment test was developed to evaluate the suitability of organic waste streams from the food industry for recovering nutrients by the aquatic worm Lumbriculus variegatus (Lv). The effects of agar gel, sand, and food quantities in the sediment test on worm growth, reproduction, and water quality were studied. Agar gel addition ameliorated growth conditions by reducing food hydrolysis a...

The MODAR process uses supercritical water, heated above 374OC and pressurized above 220 atm, as a medium for the rapid and complete oxidation of organic compounds to carbon dioxide, water and inorganic salts. The destruction efficiencies achieved exceed 99.99% for a wide range of compounds including chlorinated solvents and PCB’s. The exothermic oxidation reaction produces sufficient energy to...

introduction the problem of solid waste management is one of the most critical environmental issues because of rapid population and economic growth, urbanization, and industrialization. furthermore, global attitudes are bent on accessing sustainable agriculture and conserving a clean and green environment. vermicomposting is a process to convert organic waste by the use of earthworms to produce...

The Summitville Mine was a high-elevation (3500 m) gold mine in southwestern Colorado. The mine was abandoned in 1992, leaving approximately 200 ha of disturbance comprised partially of an open pit, a cyanide heap leach pad, and two large waste rock piles. Reclamation of these mine facilities is challenging due to extreme climatic conditions in conjunction with high acid-production potential an...
