pontryagin's principle is used to study the shape of the supersonic part of the nozzle of a carbon dioxide gas-dynamic laser whose gain is maximal. the exact shape is obtained for the uncoupled approximation of anderson's bimodal model. in this case, if sharp corners are allowed, the ceiling of the supersonic part consists of a slant rectangular sheet followed by a horizontal one; oth...
This paper presents a successive approximation method (SAM) for solving a large class of optimal control problems. The proposed analytical-approximate method, successively solves the Two-Point Boundary Value Problem (TPBVP), obtained from the Pontryagin's Maximum Principle (PMP). The convergence of this method is proved and a control design algorithm with low computational complexity is present...
In this article optimal design of shear walls is performed under seismic loading. For practical aims, a database of special shear walls is created. Special shear walls are used for seismic design optimization employing the charged system search algorithm as an optimizer. Constraints consist of design and performance limitations. Nonlinear behavior of the shear wall is taken into account and per...
This paper deals with a novel method for solving optimal control problems based on genetic programming. This approach produces some trial solutions and seeks the best of them. If the solution cannot be expressed in a closed analytical form then our method produces an approximation with a controlled level of accuracy. Using numerical examples, we will demonstrate how to use the results.
In signal restoration by Bayesian inference, one typically uses a parametric model of the prior distribution of the signal. Here, we consider how the parameters of a prior model should be estimated from observations of uncorrupted signals. A lot of recent work has implicitly assumed that maximum likelihood estimation is the optimal estimation method. Our results imply that this is not the case....
In this paper, we model and solve the problem of optimal shaping and placing to put sensors for a 3-D wave equation with constant damping in a bounded open connected subset of 3-dimensional space. The place of sensor is modeled by a subdomain of this region of a given measure. By using an approach based on the embedding process, first, the system is formulated in variational form;...
We consider optimal stopping of independent sequences. Assuming that the corresponding imbedded planar point processes converge to a Poisson process we introduce some additional conditions which allow to approximate the optimal stopping problem of the discrete time sequence by the optimal stopping of the limiting Poisson process. The optimal stopping of the involved Poisson processes is reduced...
The more a priori knowledge we encode into a signal processing algorithm, the better performance we can expect. In this paper, we overview several approaches to capturing the structure of singularities (edges, ridges, etc.) in wavelet-based signal processing schemes. Leveraging results from approximation theory, we discuss nonlinear approximations on trees and point out that an optimal tree app...
Tree approximation is a new form of nonlinear approximation which appears naturally in some applications such as image processing and adaptive numerical methods. It is somewhat more restrictive than the usual n-term approximation. We show that the restrictions of tree approximation cost little in terms of rates of approximation. We then use that result to design encoders for compression. These ...
