The in-plane optical phonons around 200 meV in few-layer graphene are investigated utilizing infrared absorption spectroscopy. The phonon spectra exhibit unusual asymmetric features characteristic of Fano resonances, which depend critically on the layer thickness and stacking order of the sample. The phonon intensities in samples with rhombohedral (ABC) stacking are significantly higher than th...

We present the influence of alignment and the real properties of optical components on the performance of a two-detector homodyne displacement-measuring quadrature laser interferometer. An experimental method, based on the optimization of visibility and sensitivity, was established and theoretically described to assess the performance and stability of the interferometer. We show that the optima...

In recent years a lot of effort was put into testing and improving the idea of a three-beam interferometer known as an optical vortices interferometer (OVI). Devices based on the idea of the OVI allow measuring small rotation angles and small shifts with a superb resolution. Unfortunately, there are still many problems that have to be solved before an OVI-based device can go into production. In...

In the quest to miniaturise photonics, it is of paramount importance to control light at the nanoscale. We reveal the main physical mechanism responsible for operation of gap plasmon-based gradient metasurfaces, comprising a periodic arrangement of metal nanobricks, and suggest that two degrees of freedom in the nanobrick geometry allow one to independently control the reflection phases of orth...

Dielectric resonators form the building blocks of nano-scale optical antennas and metamaterials. Due to their multipolar resonant response and low intrinsic losses they offer design flexibility and high-efficiency performance. These resonators are typically described in terms of a spherical harmonic decomposition with Mie theory. In experimental realizations however, a departure from spherical ...

The Low Density Matter (LDM) beamline has been built as part of the FERMI free-electron laser (FEL) facility to serve the atomic, molecular and cluster physics community. After the commissioning phase, it received the first external users at the end of 2012. The design and characterization of the LDM photon transport system is described, detailing the optical components of the beamline.

We report a detailed experimental investigation of the dependence of localized structures, observed in a nonlinear optical device, on several control parameters. A first step of the study consists in the determination of the region of existence of localized states as a function of the system variables. Subsequently, we show how different control parameters can be used to the aim of tuning sever...

The study of how to generate high-dimensional quantum states (qudits) is justified by the advantages that they can bring for the field of quantum information. However, to have some real practical potential for quantum communication, these states must be also of simple manipulation. Spatial qudits states, which are generated by engineering the transverse momentum of the parametric down-converted...

The orbital angular momentum of photons, being defined in an infinite-dimensional discrete Hilbert space, offers a promising resource for high-dimensional quantum information protocols in quantum optics. The biggest obstacle to its wider use is presently represented by the limited set of tools available for its control and manipulation. Here, we introduce and test experimentally a series of sim...

We demonstrate integrated semiconductor optical devices with ultrafast temporal responses based on the plasma-dispersion effect. The geometry of the devices removes the dependence of the modulation time on the free-carrier dynamics. We present the theoretical analysis of the performance of such devices. We show that a silicon-based device with a free-carrier lifetime of 1.4 ns can be modulated ...
