Auto-ophthalmoscopy, the process by which one's own fundus can be viewed, is an old technique which has been subject to many slight refinements throughout the years. Purkinje described 3 methods by which an impression of the vascular system could be obtained as far back as the 1820s (see von Helmholtz'). The reason why ordinarily we do not perceive the outline of our eyes' vascular system is be...

We present the first scanning laser ophthalmoscope that uses adaptive optics to measure and correct the high order aberrations of the human eye. Adaptive optics increases both lateral and axial resolution, permitting axial sectioning of retinal tissue in vivo. The instrument is used to visualize photoreceptors, nerve fibers and flow of white blood cells in retinal capillaries.

We achieved photoacoustic ophthalmoscopy (PAOM) imaging of the retina with near-infrared (NIR) light illumination. A PAOM imaging system with dual-wavelength illumination at 1064 nm and 532 nm was built. We compared in vivo imaging results of both albino and pigmented rat eyes at the two wavelengths. The results show that the bulk optical absorption of the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) is on...

THE indirect method of ophthalmoscopy offers several advantages over the direct method; these include larger field of view, better penetration of hazy media, greater depth of focus, and closer approach to the ora serrata (Schepens and Bahn, 1950). These features are of especial importance in cases of detachment of the retina, where the necessity of studying the topography and locating all the t...
