In the intestine, the vitamin D receptor is activated by 1alpha, 25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 [1,25(OH)2D3] to perform its function in calcium homeostasis, or it is activated by lithocholic acid when its levels are elevated after a meal. Both ligands transcriptionally up-regulate the mRNA of enzymes belonging to the CYP3A subfamily, increasing the metabolism of a variety of carcinogens, drugs, and ho...

Photodissociation of p-aminobenzoic acid at 266 nm was investigated by probing the nascent OH photoproduct employing the laser-induced fluorescence technique. It was found that the nascent OH radical was vibrationally cold and its rotational state distribution conformed to be a Boltzmann behavior, characterized by a rotational temperature of 1040±110 K. The rotational energy of OH was determine...

A strategy of suppressing the fast degradation behaviour of Mg-based biomaterials by the introduction of one of Mg degradation products Mg(OH)2 was proposed according to the following degradation mechanism, Mg + 2H2O ⇋ Mg(OH)2 + H2↑. Specifically, Mg(OH)2 submicron particles were mixed into poly (L-lactic acid) (PLLA) to synthesize a composite coating onto hydrofluoric acid-pretreated Mg-Nd-Zn-...

The high incidence of cardiovascular disease and vitamin D deficiency in chronic kidney disease patients is well known. Vitamin D activation by omega-3 fatty acid (FA) supplementation may explain the cardioprotective effects exerted by omega-3 FA. We hypothesized that omega-3 FA and 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) supplementation may increase 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D (1,25(OH)2D) levels compared t...

The 5-HT(1A) receptor agonist, 8- OH-DPAT, increases whole body venous tone (mean circulatory filling pressure; MCFP), and attenuates metabolic acidosis in a rat model of unresuscitated hemorrhagic shock. To determine whether improved acid-base balance was associated with sympathetic activation and venous constriction, MCFP, sympathetic activity (SA), and blood gases were compared in hemorrhage...

A preliminary in vitro acid neutralizing capacity test of twelve traditional Ayurvedic antacids were performed in this study. Five traditional preparations of ash of conch shell, ash of oyster, ash of pearl, limestone, and ash of cowrie showed high acid neutralizing capacity similar to standard antacid combination of Al(OH) 3 and Mg(OH) 2 . Among these the ash of conch shell found the highest a...

The removal of transition metal ions is crucial for improving the efficiency of subsequent peroxide bleaching. Acid-washing and chelation have been proposed for such a purpose. However, their influences on the Mg(OH)2-based peroxide bleaching of hardwood pulps at a high consistency have not been well documented in the literature. In this work, we studied the influence of acid-washing using sulf...

Phytic acid (myo-inositol hexakisphosphate, InsP(6)) hydrolysis by Bacillus phytase (PhyC) was studied. The enzyme hydrolyses only three phosphates from phytic acid. Moreover, the enzyme seems to prefer the hydrolysis of every second phosphate over that of adjacent ones. Furthermore, it is very likely that the enzyme has two alternative pathways for the hydrolysis of phytic acid, resulting in t...

The mechanism of the antiulcer effect of omeprazole was studied placing emphasis on its role to block oxidative damage and apoptosis during ulceration. Dose-response studies on gastroprotection in stress and indomethacin-induced ulcer and inhibition of pylorus ligation-induced acid secretion indicate that omeprazole significantly blocks gastric lesions at lower dose (2.5 mg/kg) without inhibiti...

The cellular fatty acid composition of eight Haemophilus equigenitalis strains was determined by gas-liquid chromatography. All strains showed a grossly similar pattern characterized by large amounts of 18:1 and 16:0. The amounts of 16:1, 18:2, 18:0, 3-OH 14:0, 3-OH 16:0, and 3-OH 18:1 were relatively small.
