The chromosome modal number in Muscoidea Diptera is 2n=12, including five pairs of autosomes and one sex chromosome pair. Nevertheless, some species with 2n=10 chromosomes have been described, all of them from the Muscidae family. We analyzed the karyotype of some Muscidae species from different subfamilies and compared the obtained data with the karyotypes of some species of the families Calli...

A technique for staining the nucleolar organizer regions (NORs) in tumor cells applied to smears from brain tumor biopsy specimens is described. This technique provides a rapid intraoperative evaluation of the proliferative activity in cerebral neoplasms and is a valuable complement to hematoxylineosin stained smears, supporting the criteria of benignity or malignancy in these tumors.

A silver staining method was used to analyze the distribution of nucleolar organizer regions (Ag-NORs) on chromosomes of 45 wild mice (Mus musculus). The four subspecies represented were M. m. musculus, M. m. molossinus, M. m. castaneus, and M. m. bactrianus. Ag-NORs were observed near the centromeric regions of 11 chromosomes (4, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 15, 16, 17, 18, and 19), indicating a preponde...

In the present study the karyotypes and the number and position of nucleolus organizer regions (NORs) of four species of Characiformes are described. The analyses showed that Acestrorhynchus lacustris had 2n=50 chromosomes (8M+34SM+6ST+2A), Oligosarcus longirostris had 2n=50 chromosomes (2M+20SM+10ST+18A), Oligosarcus cf. paranensis from Keller and Mourão rivers had 2n=50 chromosomes (2M+26SM+8...

OBJECTIVE To evaluate the changes induced in silver-stained nucleolar organizer regions (AgNORs) by the first fraction of a radiotherapy protocol for gynecologic cancer on exfoliated cytologic samples to predict the therapeutic success of the full protocol. STUDY DESIGN Thirteen gynecologic cancer patients who were scheduled for radiotherapy were included in the study. Cell smears were taken ...

The Tc1 mariner element is widely distributed among organisms and have been already described in different species of fish. The genus Ancistrus (Kner, 1854) has 68 nominal species and is part of an interesting taxonomic and cytogenetic group, as well as presenting a variation of chromosome number, ranging from 2n=34 to 54 chromosomes, and the existence of simple and multiple sex chromosome syst...

Ribosomal RNAs (28 + 18S and 5S) and 4S RNA extracted from the chironomid Glyptotendipes barbipes were iodinated in vitro with (125)I and hybridized to the salivary gland chromosomes of G. barbipes and Drosophila melanogaster. Iodinated 18 + 28 S RNA labeled three puffed sites with associated nucleoli on chromosomes IR, IIL, and IIIL of G. barbipes and the nucleolar organizer of Drosophila. Lab...

Age-related morphological and functional changes were studied in the medial mamillary nuclei of the hypothalamus (MMN). The number of nerve cells and the volume of MMN were estimated in both groups of Wistar rats, adult and old (3 and 22 months, respectively) using stereologic methods such as the optical fractionator and Cavalieri's method respectively. The number of neurons and glial cells rem...

A karyotype analysis of the electric eel, Electrophorus electricus (Teleostei, Gymnotiformes), a strongly electric fish from northern South America, is presented. Two female specimens were analyzed, one from the Amazon River and one from the Araguaia River. The specimens had a chromosomal number of 2n = 52 (42M-SM + 10A). C-bands were present in a centromeric and pericentromeric position on par...

Nucleolin is one of the most abundant protein in the nucleolus and is a multifunctional protein involved in different steps of ribosome biogenesis. In contrast to animals and yeast, the genome of the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana encodes two nucleolin-like proteins, AtNUC-L1 and AtNUC-L2. However, only the AtNUC-L1 gene is ubiquitously expressed in normal growth conditions. Disruption of thi...
