Group-EDF-a new approach and an efficient non-preemptive algorithm for soft real-time systems. Hard real-time systems in robotics, space and military missions, and control devices are specified with stringent and critical time constraints. On the other hand, soft real-time applications arising from multimedia, telecommunications, Internet web services, and games are specified with more lenient ...

CPU scheduling is the basis of multi-programmed operating systems. The scheduler is accountable for multiplexing processes on the CPU. By switching the CPU among processes, the operating system results in the computer more prolific. Various CPU scheduling algorithms exist for a multi-programmed operating system like First Come First Served (FCFS), Shortest Job First (SJF), Shortest Remaining Ti...

In this paper, we exend timed automata with asynchronous processes i.e. tasks triggered by events as a model for real-time systems. The model is expressive enough to describe concurrency and synchronization, and real time tasks which may be periodic, sporadic, preemptive and (or) non-preemptive. We generalize the classic notion of schedulability in scheduling theory to timed automata as follows...

In this paper we implement the EDF-VD (Earliest Deadline First with Virtual Deadline) algorithm described in [1] for scheduling mixed-criticality, realtime task systems on preemptive uniprocessor platforms. We compare the scheduling overheads of this algorithm with the scheduling overheads of the well known EDF (Earliest Deadline First) algorithm for scheduling realtime task systems on preempti...

The integration of different types of traffic in packet-based networks spawns the need for traffic differentiation. In this tutorial paper, we present some analytical techniques to tackle discrete-time queueing systems with priority scheduling. We investigate both preemptive (resume and repeat) and non-preemptive priority scheduling disciplines. Two classes of traffic are considered, high-prior...

A priority based packet scheduling scheme is proposed which aims at scheduling different types of data packets, such as real time and non-real-time data packets at sensor nodes with resource constraints in Wireless Sensor Networks. Most of the existing packet-scheduling mechanisms of Wireless Sensor Networks use First Come First Served (FCFS), non-preemptive priority and preemptive priority sch...

Parallel applications can be executed using the idle computing capacity of workstation clusters. However, it remains unclear how to most effectively schedule the processors among different applications. Processor scheduling algorithms that were successful for shared-memory machines have proven to be inadequate for distributed memory environments due to the high costs of remote memory accesses a...

We present a scheduling model which is tailored to the dynamics of software projects. In the model, activity times are stochastic, resources are constrained and non-identical, and scheduling is preemptive. As opposed to other stochastic project scheduling models, the completion time of an activity explicitly depends on the amount of feedback received from concurrent activities. As a consequence...

This paper revisits basic message response time analysis of controller area network (CAN). We show that existing message response time analysis, as presented in [10], is optimistic. Assuming discrete scheduling, the problem can be resolved by applying worst-case response time analysis for fixed-priority non-preemptive scheduling (FPNS) as described in [4].
