To investigate whether the production of an antigen-specific antibody is associated with Neospora caninum-induced bovine abortion, 62 serum samples were tested with an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay using the recombinant antigens NcSAG1, NcSRS2, and NcGRA7. Our study suggested that NcGRA7 would be a new marker for the serodiagnosis of N. caninum infection resulting in abortion.

The protozoan parasite Neospora caninum is a major cause of abortion in cattle. The diagnosis of neosporosis-associated mortality and abortion in cattle is difficult. In the present paper we review histologic, serologic, immunohistochemical, and molecular methods for dignosis of bovine neosporosis. Although not a routine method of diagnosis, methods to isolate viable N. caninum from bovine tiss...

The baculovirus expression system has proved to be a useful tool for the production of recombinant proteins. Here we have characterized the Neospora caninum surface protein NcSRS2 produced by two types of the recombinant virus and also have developed an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) using recombinant NcSRS2 for the serologic diagnosis of Neospora infection. Western blot analysis sho...

Toxoplasma gondii and Neospora caninum are structurally similar parasites, with many hosts in common. The prevalence of antibodies to T. gondii and N. caninum was determined in sera from dogs from Durango City, Mexico. Using a modified agglutination test, antibodies to T. gondii were found in 52 (51.5%) of the 101 dogs with titers of 1:25 in 27, 1:50 in 11, 1:100 in 5, 1:200 in 4, 1:400 in 2, 1...

neospora caninum is an intracellular parasite which causes abortion in cattle worldwide. this organism infects a range of host species, including cattle, sheep and dogs. it is most important and a major cause of bovine abortion. seroprevalence of infection in cattle appears to differ between herds, countries and regions, depending on the type of serologic test used. the aim of the present study...

Abortion, resulting from infections by the parasite Neospora caninum, is a major cause of economic loss to both the dairy and beef industries of cattle-producing countries of the world. Vaccination as a means of preventing abortion and/or infection represents a viable control strategy; indeed a commercial vaccine is available in some countries, albeit of unknown efficacy. The commercial vaccine...

BACKGROUND Neospora caninum, an obligate intracellular protozoan parasite, is recognized as a major cause of abortion in cattle, while limited information is presently available on the seroprevalence of Neospora antibodies in horses' worldwide. The aim of the present study was to determine serologic prevalence of Neospora infection in horses in Iran. METHODS Sera from 150 horses from Mashhad ...

Deer are considered important intermediate hosts for the coccidian parasites, Toxoplasma gondii and Neospora caninum. Antibodies to N. caninum and T. gondii were determined in sera of 42 mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus hemionus) and 43 black-tailed deer (Odocoileus hemionus columbianus) from Washington state, USA, using direct agglutination test with specific antigens. A titer of 1:25 was consid...

Feces from 15 dogs at 2 different foxhound kennels in the U.K. were examined microscopically for the presence of oocysts of Neospora caninum. One sample containing approximately 400 candidate oocysts per gram was positive in a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) using N. caninum-specific primers. In a sample taken 4 mo later from the same hound. N. caninum oocysts were again detected visually and b...
