Intranasal delivery of DNA vaccines has become a popular research area recently. It offers some distinguished advantages over parenteral and other routes of vaccine administration. Nasal mucosa as site of vaccine administration can stimulate respiratory mucosal immunity by interacting with the nasopharyngeal-associated lymphoid tissues (NALT). Different kinds of DNA vaccines are investigated to...

The present study was designed to determine if an oral live Bordetella bronchiseptica vaccine protects dogs from developing signs of respiratory disease after challenge with virulent Bordetella bronchiseptica. The study was also designed to compare the level of protection induced by the oral vaccine with the protection provided by an intranasal live vaccine and an injected killed vaccine. Forty...

The development of a successful vaccine against HIV is likely to require the induction of strong and long-lasting humoral immune responses at the mucosal portal of virus entry. Hence, the design of a vaccine strategy able to induce mucosal antibodies and in particular specific IgA, may be crucial to providing immune protection. Nasal immunisation is known to induce specific IgG and IgA response...

BACKGROUND An association was previously established between facial nerve paralysis (Bell's palsy) and intranasal administration of an inactivated influenza virosome vaccine containing an enzymatically active Escherichia coli Heat Labile Toxin (LT) adjuvant. The individual component(s) responsible for paralysis were not identified, and the vaccine was withdrawn. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS...

We encapsulated tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), a major proinflammatory cytokine, into cholesteryl pullulan (CHP) to prepare TNF/CHP nanoparticles. In this report, we describe the immune-enhancing capability of the nanoparticles to act as a vaccine adjuvant. TNF/CHP nanoparticles showed excellent storage stability and enhanced host immune responses to external immunogens. The nanoparticles wer...

No pseudorabies virus (PRV)-specific neutralizing or immunoglobulin G1-type antibodies were detected in sera 5 days after injection of a DNA vaccine against PRV infection in pigs. PRV-stimulated peripheral blood mononuclear cells produced gamma interferon mRNA in vitro. Two out of five pigs recovered from lethal PRV infection without attenuation of nasal viral excretion.

To investigate the antibacterial activity of mucosal Th1 and Th2 immune responses induced nasally and orally, mice were immunized with mucosal vaccine containing fimbrial protein of Porphyromonas gingivalis, a causative agent for a destructive chronic inflammation in the periodontium, and cholera toxin (CT) as mucosal adjuvant. Nasal vaccine containing low doses of fimbriae (10 micrograms) and ...

BACKGROUND S pneumoniae is the main cause of community-acquired pneumonia in the elderly, group that concentrates 95% of deaths. AIM To assess the prevalence of nasal carriage of S pneumoniae in institutionalized elderly patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS One hundred eighteen institutionalized subjects aged over 60 years (65 males) were enrolled. Since they were also participating in a controll...

The sensitivity of 12 field isolates of infectious boviine rhinotracheitis (IBR) virus and four commercial modified-live infectious bovine rhinotracheitis virus vaccine strains was determined after exposure to 20% ethyl ether (anesthetic) for 16 h at 4 c. The infectivity of five field strains was reduced by varying degrees, whereas seven were found to be resistant. Three vaccine strains were mo...

1. Vaccine virus and specific immune serum mixed in such proportions as to produce no lesion when inoculated intradermally induce immunity when instilled into the nasal cavities of rabbits. 2. The mixture is also effective when inoculated subcutaneously. 3. Immunity is brought about with a minimum of systemic reaction and no local one. 4. When the mixtures are incompletely neutralized generaliz...
