We present an investigation of molecular permeation of gases through nanoporous graphene membranes via molecular dynamics simulations; four different gases are investigated, namely helium, hydrogen, nitrogen, and methane. We show that in addition to the direct (gas-kinetic) flux of molecules crossing from the bulk phase on one side of the graphene to the bulk phase on the other side, for gases ...

Bacteriophage phi29 virus nanoparticles and its associated DNA packaging nanomotor can provide for novel possibilities towards the development of hybrid bio-nano structures. Towards the goal of interfacing the phi29 viruses and nanomotors with artificial micro and nanostructures, we fabricated nanoporous Anodic Aluminum Oxide (AAO) membranes with pore size of 70 nm and shrunk the pores to sub 4...

Silicon materials remain unused for supercapacitors due to extreme reactivity of silicon with electrolytes. However, doped silicon materials boast a low mass density, excellent conductivity, a controllably etched nanoporous structure, and combined earth abundance and technological presence appealing to diverse energy storage frameworks. Here, we demonstrate a universal route to transform porous...

Fluorinated azobenzene-modified nanoporous substrates were fabricated such that the surface properties were photoreversibly converted between superhydrophobicity and superhydrophilicity as a result of UV irradiation. This result was attributed to the enhanced surface roughness of the nanostructured surface, which supplied sufficient free space within the monolayer for the tethered azobenzenes t...

Recently Debe et al. reported that Pt3Ni7 leads to extraordinary Oxygen Reduction Reaction (ORR) activity. However, several reports show that hardly any Ni remains in the layers of the catalysts close to the surface ("Pt-skin effect"). This paradox that Ni is essential to the high catalytic activity with the peak ORR activity at Pt3Ni7 while little or no Ni remains close to the surface is expla...

In this paper, optimal conditions for fabrication of nanoporous platinum (Pt) were investigated in order to use it as a sensitive sensing electrode for silicon CMOS integrable non-enzymatic glucose micro-sensor applications. Applied charges, voltages, and temperatures were varied during the electroplating of Pt into the formed nonionic surfactant C16EO8 nano-scaled molds in order to fabricate n...

The phenylthiourea-substituted triethoxysilane as a silane agent was synthesized and grafted on highly ordered nanoporous silica (LUS- 1) with a textured morphology and hexagonal array. This material (Tu-LUS-1) contained 0.8 mmol/g of soft base phenylthiourea group and surface area 760 m2 g-1  and was able to adsorb 0.75 mmolHg/g of TU-LUS-1 in endothermic reaction.

The growth of known biologically-relevant mineral phases on semiconducting surfaces is one strategy to explicitly induce bioactivity in such materials, either for sensing or drug delivery applications. In this work, we describe the use of a spark ablation process to fabricate deliberate patterns of Ca(10)(PO4)6(OH)2 on crystalline Si (calcified nanoporous silicon). These patterns have been prin...

The rates of uptake and release of guest molecules in nanoporous solids are often strongly influenced or even controlled by transport resistances at the external surface ("surface barriers") rather than by intraparticle diffusion, which was assumed to be rate controlling in many of the earlier kinetic studies. By correlating the surface resistance with the intracrystalline diffusivity, we devel...
