The use of a reweighting technique of Montecarlo events can help in the reduction of the simulated statistics needed in 4 fermion physics studies at LEP200. A routine for the reweighting of events generated with the DELPHI customized version of the EXCALIBUR 4 fermion code is presented. Some examples of application for the W mass measurement are discussed.

The current trend in genetic research is the study of omics data as a whole, either combining studies or techniques. This raises need for new robust statistical methods that can integrate and order relevant biological information. A good way to approach problem features studied according different kinds so key point associate values permit us sorting them. These are usually p-values correspondi...

Our aim is to give a self-contained review of recent advances in the analytic description of the deconfinement transition and determination of the deconfinement temperature in lattice QCD at large N . We also include some new results, as for instance in the comparison of the analytic results with Montecarlo simulations. We first review the general set-up of finite temperature lattice gauge theo...

The thesis consists of two projects. In the first project, we present a software that analyses RNA secondary structures and compares them. The goal of this software is to find the differences between two secondary structures (experimental or predicted) in order to improve or compare algorithms for predicting secondary structures. Then, a comparison between secondary structures predicted by the ...

We consider the problem of effective and automated decisionmaking in modern real-time strategy (RTS) games through the use of reinforcement learning techniques. RTS games constitute environments with large, high-dimensional and continuous state and action spaces with temporally-extended actions. To operate under such environments we propose Exlos, a stable, model-based MonteCarlo method. Contra...

A promising approach to the problem of obtaining upper and lower bounds on the frequency response functions (FRFs) for structures whose parameters are not fully known has recently been published. The technique makes use of the modal superposition procedure in conjunction with a hybrid optimisation/interval arithmetic framework. One of the problems with this approach is that there is no self-val...

Security game models have been deployed to allocate limited security resources for critical infrastructure protection. Much work on this topic assumes that attackers have perfect knowledge of the defender’s randomized strategy. However, this assumption is not realistic, considering surveillance cost, since attackers may only have partial knowledge of the defender’s strategies, and may dynamical...

CSAW (conditioned self-avoiding walk) is a model of protein folding that combines the features of SAW (self-avoiding walk) and the MonteCarlo method. It simulates the Brownian motion of a chain-molecule in the presence of interactions. We begin with a simple model that takes into account the hydrophobic effect and hydrogen bonding. The results show that the hydrophobic effect alone establishes ...

In this paper a new approach is taken to identify a crack in a simply supported plate undergoing free vibration. The approach uses a Markov-Chain MonteCarlo implementation of Bayes’ Rule to identify the presence of a crack and, more importantly, to estimate crack parameters; the process also provides confidence intervals for those parameters. To generate the required time series, a semi-analyti...
