We demonstrate for the first time high-speed direct-modulation of InP microdisk lasers by exploiting longitudinal mode competition. High-speed operation is demonstrated by means of S21 and PRBS modulation. We show open eye diagrams and bit-error rates up to 10 Gb/s.
Two-dimensional van der Waals materials have opened a new paradigm for fundamental physics exploration and device applications because of their emerging physical properties. Unlike gapless graphene, monolayer transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) are two-dimensional semiconductors that undergo an indirect-to-direct bandgap transition1–5, creating new optical functionalities for next-generati...
We report growth and room temperature continuous wave operation of InAs quantum-dot microdisk lasers grown on nominal (001) silicon substrates. The active structure containing five layers of InAs/GaAs quantum dots was grown by MBE on a GaAs-on-v-grooved-Si (GoVS) template produced by MOCVD. Microdisk lasers with 4 μm diameters showed continuous wave lasing at room temperature with thresholds on...
Title of Dissertation : ACTIVE MICRORING AND MICRODISK OPTICAL RESONATORS ON INDIUM PHOSPHIDE Kuldeep Amarnath Doctor of Philosophy, 2006 Dissertation Directed By: Professor Ping-Tong Ho Electrical and Computer Engineering Photonic or optical logic holds the promise of ultra-fast logic circuits with capability for speeds beyond what is possible using conventional silicon electronics. However, t...
A wavelengthand bandwidthtunable filter with microelectromechanical-system (MEMS)actuated waveguides is first demonstrated on a silicon-based microdisk resonator. Integrated microheaters enabled wavelength tuning up to 125GHz. Bandwidth can be tuned from 12.0 to 41.2GHz by coupling control. © 2005 Optical Society of America OCIS codes: (130.3120) Integrated optics devices; (140.4780) Optical re...
The authors report an enhanced LiNbO3 microdisk photonic microwave receiver modulator with a sensitivity of 3 pW (285 dBm) and a bandwidth of 60 MHz centred at 14.6 GHz. The sensitivity of the modulator is improved by using a critically coupled microwave ring resonator and a modified ground plane for passive E-field amplification and confinement.
A full-vectorial integral equation method is presented for calculating near fields and far fields generated by sources in the presence of general finite-sized dielectric structures with cylindrical symmetry. The method is relevant for modeling of a class of antenna designs and some optical components with cylindrical symmetry, e.g., vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers, microdisk lasers, and...
High quality factor (Q approximately 3.4 x 10(6)) microdisk resonators are demonstrated in a Si(3)N(4) on SiO(2) platform at 652-660 nm with integrated in-plane coupling waveguides. Critical coupling to several radial modes is demonstrated using a rib-like structure with a thin Si(3)N(4) layer at the air-substrate interface to improve the coupling.
A novel RF-optical receiver architecture based on nonlinear optical modulation in a LiNbO3 microdisk modulator is presented. This is the first RF-optical receiver without high-speed electronic components for transmitted carrier links. We demonstrate receiver operation by demodulating 50 Mb/s digital data from a 8.7 GHz carrier frequency. 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
