The reaction of [14C]methylamine with native human C3 led to the stoichiometric incorporation of methylamine, loss of hemolytic activity, and the concomitant exposure of a sulfhydryl group that could be labeled with [14C]iodoacetamide. Both labeled sites were located in the C3d portion of the alpha-chain, which is known to contain the metastable binding of C3b. The methylamine-modified C3 [C3(C...
The nucleotide sequence of the methylamine utilization (mau) gene region from Methylobacterium extorquens AM1 was determined. Open reading frames for 11 genes (mauFBEDACJGLMN) were found, all transcribed in the same orientation. The mauB, mauA, and mauC genes encode the periplasmic methylamine dehydrogenase (MADH) large and small subunit polypeptides and amicyanin, respectively. The products of...
A series of neutral cubic nickel(II)-imidazolate Ni8L12X4 cages were prepared by rational choices of substituents and anions with solvothermal subcomponent self-assembly technology. Both substituents and halide anions play a critical role in the formation and stabilization of cubic cages. Changing one of the factors in the reaction will switch the final structure to a Ni14L24 rhombic dodecahedr...
Communication through gap junctions was examined in 8-cell zygotes generated by fertilization of eggs of the DDK inbred strain of mice with spermatozoa of the C3H strain. These zygotes spontaneously begin to extrude cells at the late 16-cell stage and 95% die by the blastocyst stage. The transfer of Lucifer Yellow between cells of DDK/C3H zygotes that had not yet begun to express the defect was...
Radiolabeling of native proteins conventionally has required iodination using 125Iodine (125I). Although radioiodination can result in high specific activity, there are several drawbacks in the use of 125I (e.g., radiological hazards and short half-life). 14C-Methylamine-glutaraldehyde conjugation to proteins offers an alternative for radiolabeling of proteins that is safer and longer-lived alp...
Methylamine is an abundant amine compound detected in the atmosphere which can affect the nature of atmospheric aerosol surfaces, changing their chemical and optical properties. Molecular dynamics simulation results show that methylamine accommodation on water is close to unity with the hydrophilic head group solvated in the interfacial environment and the methyl group pointing into the air pha...
The C1-compound monomethylamine can serve as a nitrogen, carbon, and energy source for heterotrophic bacteria. The marine alphaproteobacterium Donghicola sp. strain KarMa can use monomethylamine as a source only for nitrogen and not for carbon. Its draft genome sequence is presented here and reveals putative gene clusters for the methylamine dehydrogenase and the N-methylglutamate pathways for ...
An unexpected Sc(OTf)3-catalyzed and air-mediated cascade reaction of o-aminoacetophenones with methanamines was discovered as an efficient synthetic approach to a novel class of fluorescent fused-four-ring dibenzo[b,h][1,6]naphthyridine derivatives. Two possible mechanisms of the reaction were proposed. The photophysical properties of the dibenzo[b,h][1,6]naphthyridine were initially considered.
Slime production by bacterium W3A1 was greatly enhanced during growth on methanol and, to a lesser extent, during growth on trimethylamine. Of the major dehydrogenases synthesized, trimethylamine and methylamine dehydrogenases were induced to different levels by certain carbon sources, while methanol dehydrogenase was expressed during growth on all carbon sources.
