The relationship between the binding of L-triiodothyronine (T3) to nuclear receptors and the induction of growth hormone synthesis was examined in cultured GH1 cells, a rat pituitary cell line. After 24 hr, T3 induced a maximal 4-fold increase in the rate of growth hormone wynthesis; the T3 concentration that induced a half-maximal increase was 0.22 nM. The biologic dose-response curve was shif...
Raoul Bott has inspired many of us by the magnificence of his ideas, by the way he approaches and explains mathematics, and by his warmth, friendship, and humor. In celebration of Raoul’s eightieth birthday we offer this brief article in which we will explain how the recent cohomological ideas of Jan Nekovár̆ [N2] imply (under mild hypotheses plus the Shafarevich-Tate conjecture) systematic grow...
Let C be a curve of genus 2 and ψ1 : C −→ E1 a map of degree n, from C to an elliptic curve E1, both curves defined over C. This map induces a degree n map φ1 : P 1 −→ P 1 which we call a Frey-Kani covering. We determine all possible ramifications for φ1. If ψ1 : C −→ E1 is maximal then there exists a maximal map ψ2 : C −→ E2, of degree n, to some elliptic curve E2 such that there is an isogeny...
By “number theory” I mean algebraic number theory, and by Part 1, roughly the years 1900–1940. The treatment is very sketchy; I hope at some later date to cover the rest of the century and to fill in some of the gaps and correct any errors in this hasty account. At the end of the 19th century, Kurt Hensel introduced the idea of the completion kv of a field k with respect to a discrete valuation...
For a Boolean Matrix A a binary vector v is called tfrequent if Av has at least t entries of value supp (v). Given two parameters t1 < t2 the t1-frequent but t2-infrequent vectors of a matrix represent a Boolean function that has two domains of (opposite) monotonicity. These functions were studied for the purpose of data analysis and abstract concept discovery in (Eisenschmidt et al. 2010). In ...
We exhibit the isogeny classes of supersingular abelian threefolds over F2n containing the Jacobian of a genus 3 curve. In particular, we prove that for even n > 6 there always exist a maximal and a minimal curve over F2n . All the curves can be obtained explicitly.
We show that an Fq2-maximal curve of genus 1 6 (q − 3)q > 0 is either a non-reflexive space curve of degree q+1 whose tangent surface is also non-reflexive, or it is uniquely determined, up to isomorphism, by a plane model of Artin-Schreier type whenever q ≥ 27. An algorithm of estimation of the curvature at each point of a general discrete curve in O(nlogn) is proposed. It uses the notion of blurred segment, extending the definition of segment of arithmetic discrete line to be adapted to noisy curves. The proposed algorithm relies on the decomposition of a discrete curve into maximal blurred segments also presented in this paper.
Given any simple closed curve C in the Euclidean plane, let w and D denote the minimal and the maximal caliper distances of C, correspondingly. We show that any such curve C has a geometric dilation of at least arcsin( w D ) + √
